4-30 Weather Update

I was going to add to Jeff's post, but decided to do a new one for ya'll.

Cold, Cold, Cold.  Three colds because that's still the number of days the northern tier is going to feel the effects of the last storm system.

A couple of things I'm looking at this morning.  Last night I spoke about finally getting some weather from the southwest.  This is going to be the dominant weather feature over the next week.  A low pressure system looks like it will form over the central US.  This system is going to take it's time to develop, but looks like by next Monday, April 7th could begin to produce rain showers.  The unfortunate thing, the way I see it, is it's going to impact mostly the areas that don't need the rain - far E OK and AR north into MO and IL, then points east. The northern tier looks like it will break out of the cold weather lock that Canada has on it for a day or two, but only a very small area is really going to benefit from it.  As I have said before, we need the dry from the SW.  Instead, this developing low pressure system is going to be pulling moisture from the gulf up into the Central US, and altough it's going to be warm, it's going to be difficult with this setup to get our soggy fields up north dry.  It's not ideal to be sure.  Those that will benefit the most are those in Western MN, Eastern N and S Dakota.  I would include NE and KS in this, but probably the last thing they need is hot and dry from the SW, sorry guys.  Other that the states I spoke about at the beginning of this (E OK, AR, etc) most everyone else in the plains looks like - at best - hit and miss showers.  And those are a week away.  Up North the suffering continues....

Re: 4-30 Weather Update

John - I was going to write that it was going to be a great day for you guys, but it won't.  That's the time period where that Low pressure system is beginning to gather strength over NE.  It's going to pump humid air up into WI, but you weather is going to be more dominated by a large Low up in Canada, which drops the jet stream all the way south to Baja of Mexico, and then turns back NE and ends up over WI.  Combined with the low level Low over NE, it's going to make for another rainy period that begins about then.  And - unfortunately - that Low in Canada is very slow moving... It's going to be a weather maker for you guys for probably the better part of a week.

Re: 4-30 Weather Update

Another crappy day.  Cold, with a light drizzle that makes it just miserable to be outside.  Went out to do a ground temp check.  At 4 inches in sod it's 40 degrees.  I sprayed some roundup weathermax a few days ago where I want to plant sweet corn this year, and it hasn't done a thing to the grass or weeds.   Looked for some morels, I figured it was too soon for them, but thought that I'd look anyway.  Not yet there either.  It's just too cold.
