Big deal like it's never happened before. Especially right before a winter storm moving into the region Warm west winds blowing over the mountains called shinooks often cause temp spikes in this region close to the east side of the rockies in the winter months.

ok, i've only heard about the shinooks. been near Bozeman this time of year.....it's more west......just don't remember it being that warm.

Minor item but it would be spelled 'chinook', as in the salmon variety. If it goes to Montana it goes over my head first. Has been somewhat warmer here (just got back). Not abnormally so. But heavy overcast which is normal.

In a simplistic view it is like a rollercoster the relativily warm Pacific air rises over the rockies and then on the eastern leeward side it rushs down the slope and is compressed which causes it to heat up the stronger the wind the more the temp rise.
