8 - 10 Weather Update

Morning All!  Well, let's start off this morning with our overnight rainfall, and see what Shaggy picked up:

US: Rainfall Estimate 24 Hour

KS and NE did pretty well last night.  Those thunderstorms moving through KS on radar looked pretty wicked.   Right here where I am in OKC we picked up a quick 2 inches yesterday in a downpour.  I've never been in a place that has such loud and sharp lightning.  Ka-BOOOOOOM!  You can hear it echo for miles around.  The thunderstorms here developed really rapidly, were gone, and then redeveloped.

For today, we have the cold front that gave Shaggy some rain exiting to the East:

10 Day forecast of surface pressure and precipitation amounts from the GFS model

and it's going to be a couple of nice days (if you want some sunshine) to maybe get third crop hay put up.  The larger weather system comes in for next weekend, and still looks like it will be a multiday affair for many in the Midwest.

Southern CA and AZ especially look to pick up some rain also the next few days, with a cut off Low that forms over that area:

10 Day forecast of 300 mb winds and heights from the GFS model

and then is reincorporated into the Jet Stream.  But this is the same enegy that will be responsible for the midwest rainfall next weekend, and for much of the East (which looks like it could get a multiday frog strangler) after that.  It's interesting, but after the Low above gets reincorporated into the Jet, another one forms in the same area:

10 Day forecast of 300 mb winds and heights from the GFS model

but this little Low moves quickly westward on it's own in the latest computer projections.   For Broke Farmer in AZ - keep the hay equipment in the shed this week - there won't be much moving fo ryou as that cutoff Low give you a chance of precip all week long.  It looks better after Saturday for you to put up hay.

Shaggy, it's a good thing you got the rain last night, although you still have some chances today, but I think for you it's probably over for now.  You'll have to wait until next Friday for more.

I had a couple ears of corn in my car yet from the trip down to OKC.  they had dried up enough that I could shell them (barely) and I went and fed the ducks and the geese at Route 66 Park (  http://www.okc.gov/Parks/route_66/index.html  ) just west of Lake Overholser.  It has a 1 mile walking path around the Lake, and is a great place for us to go walk the puppies.  There are usually a lot of little kids that like to ask if they can pet our dogs, and our Daschounds just eat up the attention.

I have a few pictures I want to show you, but I have a few issues to resolve before I can do that.  I'll be back in a bit....

Re: 8 - 10 Weather Update

Haven't been to the farm to check gauge yet, but according to some online reports I received anywhere from .40" to .75". Not the amount I was wishing for and very well might need to withdrawal my earlier comment about possibly being a crop finishing rain. My earlier planted milo is entering grain fill and has received about 1-1/2" rain the past 3 days so it should have some moisture to work with. The few acres that are just beginning to head will probably need a little more moisture but it started out with more due to a 3 week planting time out for precip received the first 3 weeks of June.

Re: 8 - 10 Weather Update

OK - I'm back.  I was just trying to figure out a quicker way to get photos on here.  I think I found it.  Hopefully, it doesn't come with a whole lot of stuff that I don't want.

Anyway, I speak of my boys pretty often, thought I would show you a picture of them.  Here they are, enjoying their combine ride:

And let's see, when I was looking for that picture, I found this one.  If you remember, a few weeks ago, I spoke of my little tractor and how I had used it for spraying crops a few times when the fields were just too wet and I was desperate to get in there and spray:

That's an IH244 that I had bought new some years ago.  It was a fun little tractor.  It was small enough and light enough that it went through literally anything.  I never got it stuck in the time I owned it.  Not even close to being stuck.  And yes, that blue thing in the back is a crane.  It's a Bantam that is as old as I am, but it was great around the farm.  We did most all of our own high work with setting pipes, etc.  It saved me a bundle of money over the years in not having to get a crane out.  Of course, it also ended me up in the hospital for a week and a year in rehab when an auger I was painting and had suspended from the crane somehow came loose from the chains supporting it, hit my leg and pushed my kneecap halfway down my shin.  That was painful.  It severed my patella tendon.  Harvest that fall was interesting too, and painful.   Did I mention it was painful?  The last picture is from last year about this time:

That nasty thing was from last summer, an infection that landed me in the hospital for a week 3 weeks before my auction.  It was bad - bad bad.  I was supposed to go home and recuperate for a month after this photo was taken.  THAT wasn't going to happen.  Man that thing was painful, too.   If it wasn't for my neighbors who came and helped me get ready in the week before the auction, I would've been screwed.  One more thing about the auction.  We were basically on our own.  I'd be very, very careful when you hire an auction company.  You're hiring them to sell your stuff.  And they will sell it, no matter what it brings.   For me - never again.

Re: 8 - 10 Weather Update

Will you elaborate on your different approach to posting pictures? I've only been successful using my PC. I've all but given up trying to use my tablet or smartphone. Ones an Apple product and the other is an Android but both offer the same result, failure.

Re: 8 - 10 Weather Update

Hi Shag.  I use my PC.  I used to have to email the pictures to myself, which would compress them small enough to use on here.  This morning I downloaded a free(that's always scarry to me) program called jpeg mini.  It worked real well for the PC.  This time, I don't have my Ipad with me, there might be something similar that would work with it, but I doubt that it will work on my Iphone.  Like you, I'm still seaching for a picture direct to Ag Online app.  But I haven't looked that hard.  There's so much crap out there now, you never know if what you're downloading is going to wipe your hard drive, or steal what you have on it.

Re: 8 - 10 Weather Updated

I agree Jen, I use your original email to self method and use the photo manipulator program that came with the computer to compress into favorable posting size. Not the quickest method, but it seems safe and secure.

Re: 8 - 10 Weather Updated

My problem here, being on the parks internet system, I don't have email.  I have used AOL in the past if I have to, but it's not like my email at home.  And it's time consuming, because all me email goes through my son's server (he's an IT professional) where we have multiple programs that eliminate most, not all of the junk email that comes through.  Then it finally gets to me.   But that process can take a long time - hours even, and when I'm trying to get something posted, it really gets frustrating.  So I'm trying out this new program.  It's really simple -  and so far, nothing funky.

I got an email (survey) last night from the Agweb folks about weather and what I used for my weather sources.  I did the survey, even though they didn't include me on their list.  If Al Pell made the list, I think I should of  😉

I was a bit afraid this morning though, when my email didn't work and my computer was really, really slow.  I did have a fleeting thought of, "The spammers sucked me in....", but everything seems to be OK now.  I need to be more vigilant on the emails....

Re: 8 - 10 Weather Updated

Just for the record, 5 or 6 days of dry would be alright for me now.  My crops all received a nice drink and I've got 75 acres of CRP I could put up if I so choose.  The CRP has been all hayed the past two years and has turned out to be some decent hay this year with the enhancement of a few pounds of alfalfa drilled into it 3 years ago.  If nothing else, it could be rolled out and used for bedding.  Not even requiring a 10% payment penality or repayment this year, strange bunch of people those USDA folks are.
