9 - 17 Weather Update
Good Morning. It's been a long, long two days at work. When the day shift left yesterday, and I was left to do my second double shift, I wasn't sure I was going to make it. But, I had enough adrenaline still flowing from catching that big fish, that it helped me through. I threw it back - stunk too much.
Hopefully, you haven't already filled your freezer with bread and the cupboards full of powdered milk to fight off the winter crazed Zombie hoard.
Let's see what's going on with the weather today. Our current Jet Stream:
The main Jet has retreated back into Canada, but we currently have a weak split across the US. The Jet stays mainly up in Canada the next week, but then makes a dip back into the US 9 days from now:
Most of the air mass wrapping into this dip in the Jet is coming from the west, which will modify the air mass and warm it enough to keep temperatures from dipping into the kill area.
Wisconsin and MN have 1 more frosty night tomorrow night. This will probably be the fourth time in a week that my former farm in Central WI will have at least a touch of frost. My neighbor ofver there said his lawn was white a few days ago. So much for it won't frost or freeze if it's wet.
Our largest weather storys are on this forecast map:
First, it the hurricane coming up the Baja and into AZ. This is going to bring AZ a lot of rain the next few days - a frog strangler - and is forecast to make it's way here into OK over the weekend. Even here, they are talking about the possiblilty of flooding from this system. Broke Farmer - it's going to be a few days now before you can harvest anything. For you, it looks like next Tuesday before you're going to be able to do much of anything.
The other thing in the map above - the Low off the Coast of OR and CA. Finally, that high in the ocean is showing signs of breaking down, but this system is not real large. It will help Northern CA a bit, but after this goes through, it looks like dry again. Sorry - I wish I could've said this was the beginning of the end for you folks out there - I'm not so sure it is yet.
For the Midwest, that hurricane from the Baja eventually gets wrapped into a Low pressure system dropping out of Canada:
and will bring showers for the weekend and into early next week, before we have our next high that drops into the Midwest from the Arctic:
Although there don't seem to be a lot of freezing temps associatied with this High right now, it bears watching. Combined with the Jet Stream that I showed you at the start, I continue to wonder about this one, and how cold it might get. Let's see what happens the next few days.
That's it for today. Hopefully, your freezer isn't full of bread, and you have some room for some more of this falls bounty. I'm looking forward to my next break at home to put away somemore sweet corn (maybe on the cob) and get our squash put up for the winter. Hopefully, the Zombies won't find it.

Re: 9 - 17 Weather Update
I thoroughly enjoy the weather updates and the analysis. But I need to know, how do you put up squash? Do you mean you pick it and put it in a cave, or do you process it some way? Keep up the good work.
My feeling is, and that is all it is is a feeling, that the crop in our area, west central Iowa will be deceiving. Corn will be picked that is tremendous and the farmer will only remember that and not the "not quite so good" part. Just a guess at this point. No harvesting done yet, and it will still be a while.

Re: 9 - 17 Weather Update
I still think the jury is out on our final crop totals. I was wrong last year. I'm happy enough to wait for the final totals. Like my neighbor Rog always says, "We'll know when it's in the bin."
