Another 100,000+ acres gone? Cause: Irrigation tunnel collapse.

Early 1900's-era Gering-Fort Laramie irrigation tunnel collapse brought irrigation to a halt, affecting Wyoming and western Nebraska farmers.  The collapse plugged the tunnel, causing the water to back up into the canal, breaching the canal.

Will take several weeks and millions of dollars to fix.

The hits just keep coming.

Re: Another 100,000+ acres gone? Cause: Irrigation tunnel collapse.

I farm in this area, no irrigation wells in the area that water was lost,108,000 total acres under this district, the tunnel was built in 1916 once again showing that infrastructure is outdated. Crop insurance agents are advising that it won’t pay out because it was not a natural disaster that caused the collapse and breach... if there are no insurance or disaster payments the repercussions will be devastating for years... Hopefully god sends timely rains to those involved!

They rate it as irrigated - charge more per acre for the insurance.  Reimbursing multiple years of premiums might be more expensive than paying this claim.
