Brazil Soybean Harvest Underway

Brazil's soybean harvest has started in the CenterWest, Mato Grosso. Our reporter friends from Gazeta do Povo newspaper sent me this message and photos this morning:

"We are just beginning the soybean harvest. The first fields harvested are the irrigated part of the farms. It’s a small part of the fields. At the normal fields, the harvest was starting yesterday, in Mato Grosso.
 
In Paraná, we have received the information that the first field would be harvested this morning.

It looks like even Brazilian farmers are using more new paint. This is the start of what is expected to be Brazil's largest soybean crop ever. Obviously, Brazilian analysts expect the soybean market to be pressured for the next few months, as this crop is taken out of the field.

This year, the Brazilian farmers are expected to plant more second crop soybeans. This year's total soybean production estimate is 89.95 million tons. Less second crop corn and more second crop soybeans, this year.

They've actually been harvesting early-planted soybeans in Mato Grosso since around Christmas. Reuters ran a harvest report from Aprosoja, the Mato Grosso producers group on Dec. 30 that cited harvest progress in Campo Verde and Primavera do Leste in southern Mato Grosso, Sapezal in the western part of the state and Lucas do Rio Verde and Sorriso in northern Mato Grosso.

Thursday Update:

Brazil's Ag Minister sees the 2013/14 soybean production reaching 95.0 mmt.

CONAB, the government's supply agency sees the same crop at 90.33 mmt.

The new 2013/14 corn production estimate is pegged at 78.97 mmt, higher than the 78.78 mmt estimate in December.
