Canadian Frost Potential for Full Moon

Note:  This is copied from my 9-2 Weather Update below.  I thought it was worthy to carry over on its own.

Hi Farmerguy89 - Let's distinguish 'Frost' from 'Freeze'.  Remember,  a 'Frost' can occur and cause plant damage with air temps as high as 42 degrees F (5.5 degrees C).

It's about the heat flow. There are three fundamental ways of transferring heat: Conduction (direct contact), Convection (contact with a fluid) and radiation (electromagnetic waves).

Crops can experience frost even though the ambient air temperature is above freezing if the heat loss due to radiation (cloudless night) is greater than the convective heat gain from the air.

'Freezing' is when the temp drops below 32 degrees, and the water in the plant expands and destroys the cell walls, which, if severe enough, will kill the plant.

Now, with that said, I'm not in Canada.  I'm going by what I'm seeing on the weather maps, that I have no reason to not be accurate.  And, actually, the temps have fallen more as of tonight.  Here's the latest maps that I am referring to:

10 Day forecast of 1000 mb (near-surface) temperature and wind from the GFS model

As you can see on the map above, this event starts on Sunday night, the 7th.  The full moon is the 8th.  The map above clearly shows large areas of Alberta to Ontario with cool temps.   Freeze here - no, frost, very possible.  (actually, the temps start dropping as early as Friday night, the 5th, but gets colder as the 7th approaches).  By next Thursday, the 111th, this is what we see:

10 Day forecast of 1000 mb (near-surface) temperature and wind from the GFS model

Everything from Alberta to Ontartio is cold.  This WILL BE FROST - some of these areas will see the end of the growing season in a freeze.  These temps are getting colder as the days have gone by.  One more map:

10 Day forecast of 1000 mb (near-surface) temperature and wind from the GFS model

This is for Friday, the 12th.  The cold now dips into the Northern Tier states of MN and ND.  Again, probably not a freeae here in the US, but this event is going to slow down crop development.

Anyway, this is what I'm seeing.  Coincidence that it is occuring over the full moon?  I don't think so, but we've had this argument before on here.  The US is going to escape most of this event.  I could have been worse....

Re: Canadian Frost Potential for Full Moon

Wow - Now this is a Low:

10 Day forecast of 300 mb winds and heights from the GFS model

This is the Jet Stream forecast for next Thursday.  This is a massive Low, and why the temps have been dropping in the forecasts.  If this happens, I see the temps dropping even lower, and farther South...stand by...

Re: Canadian Frost Potential for Full Moon

Local forecasts are not indicating any frost in Ontario.

7 day London says 9 Sunday night

http://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/on-137_metric_e.html

14 day only calling for 10 on Sunday and higher for rest of 14 days.

Earliset I have ever seen 'frost' here is Sept 13 and it was just a light 'frost' not a freeze.

More often into October lately before we get frost.

Re: Canadian Frost Potential for Full Moon

I'm not holding out for anything. I have no dog in this fight, and I call it the way I see it. Beyond that, your assumptions are a bit premature, when the combines haven't rolled yet. I remember golfing with a guy one time, his ball was a foot from the hole, and he goes, "That's a gimme". He putted it out - and missed. The putter ended up in the lake. I ended up with a story to tell.

My heart will always be with the producer. But it does me no good to try to skew events one way or the other, as it just makes me another one of you trying to drive the market to make their positions good ones. I'm more like a broker at this point - I don't really care which way the market moves. As a non-participant, I win, because I haven't gambled away what I already have.

Re: Canadian Frost Potential for Full Moon

. I wasn't sure of the hugest possible freezing temp but I'm glad you found it. Bout what I thought.

I'm glad your echoing what I think Canuck: frost just isn't going to happen. Not with 9c and clouds and wet ground. Even real far north thy will have clouds and such..

Next time could b mid September if we can drop temps more, but I don't believe it.

It's warm and sunny today and for a bit.. These t storms bringing the heat

Re: Canadian Frost Potential for Full Moon

Just reading in another forum, quite a few reports in Canada of light frost patches over the last week or so.
