Does Sweetcorn Know?
This question of whether sweetcorn growth is a leading indicator of fieldcorn is asked each year. Here's one for you. Have you ever seen sweetcorn tassel at thigh-high level?
This picture was taken June 15 in central Iowa

Re: Does Sweetcorn Know?
The traders don't think the crop is made. They think the crop is not killed. Why should they take a flier on when the crop is killed until empirical data demands it? Farmers who think the crop is killed are, of course, buying the board and selling puts.

Re: Does Sweetcorn Know?
Yes, I have seen sweetcorn tassel at the thigh-level. What we are looking at is most likely a 60+ day hybrid that that was planted early and sat still during some cold rainy weather. The ears will be small but can be very sweet. The grower will plant a much taller 70+ day with larger ears for their main season corn. Talk about taking out the "low hanging fruit" the coons just love this short corn.
This grower may have sweetcorn ready by the 4th of July.
I'm ready for it!!

Re: Does Sweetcorn Know?
I would expect some shorter early planted crop. But sweetcorn is just a distant cousin with a real tight schedule.
Not a good comparison.

Re: Does Sweetcorn Know?
With several processing plants in our area various varieties of sweet corn are planted.
The planting window is several weeks long in order to stretch out the harvest season.
There are a couple fields in the area that just got planted.
Not so easy to use it as a "benchmark".
