Drought makes 'recipe for frustration'

After reading Roy Smith's excellent column again (full story), I was prompted to add up the decades in which drought has impacted farmers in my lifetime.

Among several key points, Roy writes: "Thinking back over my farming career I realize that no two droughts are the same." And the weather unknowns, he says, add up to a "recipe for frustration in formulating a marketing plan."

It's sobering to think how often the weather has gone south, and to be reminded again why farm safety nets and risk management practices were created in the first place.

Anyway, here's the bit: Enough of drought for one lifetime.
