Estimating yields

In the continuing quest to get a better handle on the actual prospects for this year's corn crop (for coffee shop talk, if nothing else), I'm wondering what use anybody has ever made of ear counts like the yield component method.

Bob Nielsen at Purdue writes about it here: Estimating corn Yield Prior to Harvest

(That largest ear of corn in Nebraska, circa 1908, appears to be from my grandpa's farm in Buffalo County 😉

I'm going to taking a windshield tour across the Corn Belt next week and thought I might try to take some counts and pics along the way.

Anybody been out eyeballing the crop?
