Flooding Pollution

One of the local TV stations this morning was talking about the the fertilizer contamination in our flood water is 10 times the EPA recommended maximum. Just thought it was an interesting tidbit of info. Think that all that rain is no big deal for the crops? Given all the water that the Mississippi has in it right now, heading for the Gulf, a LOT of fertilizer and topsoil is going to be heading South with it. I'll leave it at that.

Re: Flooding Pollution

Hi k-289,

Other than just gigging folks over their sense of unique entitlement to government largesse, that's my big grievance with the Farm bill and general current state of things.

On conservation matters in the Farm Bill the left went missing to defend Food Stamps (a brilliant strategy) and the right went missing because the sportmen's groups are just worried about somebody taking their guns (also brilliant, and far reaching).

My fellow Mayans, as long as we throw 7 virgins in the volcano daily, you can rest assured that all will be well...

Re: Flooding Pollution

I'm sure that farm pollution is the only pollution in the rivers.......

Re: Flooding Pollution

I good with the virgins, except finding one over the age of 16 this day and age is probably going to be a little tough.  You may want to substitute some nice Extra Virgin Soybean Oil instead - and - it's extra demand for the soybeans that we don't have.

Mommy, he did it too!

I think it's quite well established that agriculture is a significant contributor. Not surprising as it is by far the most extensive land use in the watersheds, and will remain so no matter what. But there are practical ways to reduce runoff and erosion.

In general, I'm not too sympathetic to folks that want to hang a half dozen shanks of the 60' field cult over the ditchbank and then get indignant that anybody would criticize agriculture.

Re: Flooding Pollution

Just saw some corn tissue sample reports from my area. On our farm and nearby we need a few micronutrients but the NPK is very good. We have not been under any of the flooding rains. The reports from farms 15 miles north where they have had flooding are very deficient on N. Those fields were dry fall applied and anhydrous in the spring. Our corn looks awesome. Theirs looks stunted.

Re: Flooding Pollution

So if I'm only part of the pollution problem I need a special exemption ?
