Re: Floor Talk January 26
Luis,
You summarized the FAEG article well. But, here is a bit more that folks might find interesting.
Another factor that aggravates this crop loss situation are the high temperatures recorded early this year. This heat associated with low humidity directly affects the development of crops, causing leaves of abortion, flowers and pods, lower grain weight and fall in yield potential of crops. Among the affected crops, the highlights are soybean, but losses in maize and beans crops were also reported by the participants of the meeting.
José Mário
Last season, 2013/14, the rains started earlier and around 10 October 2013, most producers had already started planting soybeans, the state's main crop during the summer, which occupies more than 75% the planted area. This season, 2014/15, the rains were late and, around October 20, many producers had not yet begun planting. The moisture stress and not only dry now reached the stage of grain fillers, but all stages of the plant in different regions, as flower stage, filling and drying the grain.
The president of FAEG, José Mário Schreiner, 2015 tends to be a year of greater insecurity. "In 2014 we had drought in more specific locations. This year the picture has worsened because all Goiás suffering from drought. The final reflections still depend on the weather that is yet to come in the coming weeks, but the impacts are already large. We can not forget that the agricultural sector accounts for 80% of export in Goiás and 70% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the State. The situation is worrying a lot! "He added.
