cant find much info on him in agriculture, other than the sales of his oil........

Re: Forrest Lucas....ag secy ?

mr cheap...Forest is NOT an oil man. He is a snake oil salesman that went from driving a truck to making hundreds of millions selling aditives to Trumps base basically. He is sharp. Good guy to take all the hits from renegotiating the trade deals and the upcoming global debt debacle.

Last thing we need is to have both the Pres of Farm Bur, and the SEc Ag from Georgia. I guess IL would deserve it after selling out Villwock for a board seat.

Re: Forrest Lucas....ag secy ?

Whoever the next Ag Sec is, if they are lucky enough that there`s a couple droughts that cuts production, the prices will be good and they will be most beloved.  Because a cut in production that results in higher prices always (within reason) helps the farmer`s bottomline.  Since we`re in the "market oriented" hamster wheel, our only real salvation will come from Mother Nature.

We`ve had 8 years of a more liberal run farm program, but we were saddled with the clean water crap and global warming hoaxes, but no where near enough carrots to keep us fed after jumping through all the hoops.  Actually it`s fine with me that Trump is taking his time on this and not latching on to the nearest opportunist that`s been kissing up to him.

Re: Forrest Lucas....ag secy ?

Did a quick search of Forrest Lucas and he seems pretty good.  His wife Charlotte sounds really smart too, except Forrest takes out full page ads apologizing for what she says   😉 oh you can bet the liberals would have a hay day with that.

The liberals will have a hay day regardless...much better tactically to let them attack a beautiful woman. 🙂

Re: Forrest Lucas....ag secy ?

Whomever it is .......... AG is in the crossfire now..... a good target for everybody...... cut foodstamps, cut subsidies, environmental scapegoats, red meat,    industrial ag, factory farms, gmo,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,   Lucas would be OK for the job....  I sure don't want it........ although it would be a very interesting time to be close to the fire...

Re: Forrest Lucas....ag secy ?

All the hoopla about ag secretary got me to wondering??  Who was the last ag secretary who was a real advocate for productiion agriculture?   And who was the best ag secretary during your farming career, and why?  I'd like to hear peoples thoughts.

Re: Forrest Lucas....ag secy ?

great questions and memory checkers...........................

First I remember was Orville Freeman -- 1960's as I remember was on the entitlement front to establish food stamps program...

Most interesting was----- Earl Butz...... interesting life....... disliked but visionary  one of the few to actually tried to  guide agriculture into what turned out to be the future.

Favorite personally ----- Dan Glickman ........... met him several times......  You gotta have solid character to serve 18 years in congress as a democrat from Kansas.

Re: Forrest Lucas....ag secy ?

Not too sure what to think of Earl Butz.

Back in the day a couple local guys picked him up at the MSP airport

and brought him to speak at an area event.  On their way from the airport they drove by

a farm that still used a long corn crib for storage.  Mr. Butz made them stop

so he could take a picture.  Said he hadn't seen one in use for more than 20 years.

Made folks wonder where he'd been?!?!?!

Re: Forrest Lucas....ag secy ?

Probably hands down winner of this question is

HENRY A WALLACE

In recent memory my vote goes to Earl Butz, he was here one summer day at our local fairgrounds , gave quite a nothing but blue skies ahead speech. He at least publicly made headlines promoting agriculture. Just had one too many politically incorrect jokes.

Since then just a long line of "Casper milktoast" types.
