Re: From the floor February 3

It was 23* down on the AZ/Mexico border night before. Somebody's wheat somewhere on the Plains is dying if they don't have snow cover. And that is a fact.

Not sure that would be a guaranteed kill. That is just -5C and we get lots of temperatures that low and lower that do not kill our wheat even without snow cover. Most has snow cover here but it is -12 heading to -18 tonight and that would not kill a dormant wheat crop in Ontario.

There are other factors, is it dormant is one. Starting to green up would change that. Freezing and thawing  over and over is more of a problem for us as it can cause heaving leaving the plants out of the ground and at risk of drying out with a wind.

Re: From the floor February 3

I mainly agree with you. Last year my wheat went to -10F with no cover, but it had hardened off - and there was no wind, and no other stress. I got 95 bu/ac. However, it's windy down here and if wheat is moisture stressed and gets hit , bare, with a stiff cold wind it will generally suffer.
