of agriculture as far OUT as possible.
No reason the govt should not be completely OUT.
Keep in mind when Your sucking Uncle Sam for 1/3 of Your income.... That meansYou Owe them... They in some respects OWN Your life.
Your best off to be Independent.
That way any markers called... It's Your discretion.... Not the govt's.
Solved! Go to Solution.
All true, but governments realize that the one thing that reliably brings down governments is widespread food shortages. Therefore, they'll keep paying us to overproduce 'til the cows come home. The excess is exported.
The only possible mention of the USA govt may be The new wh-re of Babylon in the Bible.
They will try to broker everything traded on Earth.
Irregardless the USA has followed the European ag model of socialism for decades now.
It's high for land values. The EU lands were $20k per acre in the 1970s BTW... Just more now.
Look at the govt's value. The land of the social system is not yours.... Its theirs.
government payments distort basic economics.
when you create a system where no one fails, the entry slots for new farmers basically disappear.
I know it is a heartache to see failure, but that is part of what makes capitalism work, and what brings so much prosperity to so many.
I fear what agriculture will look like 25 years from now, based on the trajectory of the last 25 years.
Ag should be just like other industry.
You can insure to prevent segmental failures... Thus Your insuring for success.
And the govt should not be involved in crop insurance.
Private insurance companies can do it All.
Something's to think about.
The biggest factor propping up the big farms in this part of the country isn't the government but the big investment banks. As long as they get a return greater than the prevailing interest rate and their equity is preserved by the increase in land prices, they're happy. But one of the key factors in their business model is cheap migrant labor. Farm labor is the only segment of the labor market that I know of that still doesn't get paid overtime, thousands of hours worth per year.
Ever notice how all the government labor statistics are always labeled "non-farm labor". There's a reason for that.
IS the Grundy County Iowa land sale a reason for the government to be in or out - ?
If free markets being the plan , why do outfits like walmart etc. rely on gov. gimmies- ?
3000 BC, the Pharaohs of Egypt operated government grain reserves. That's 5000 years ago and the reason was simple, the fastest & surest way for a government to fail is hungry people. You didn't like it when the government operated grain reserves back in the 1980's and now you don't like it when they essentially do the same thing with crop insurance designed to keep the farmers planting through low prices. This way, at least you're still in business when high prices come around.
You got 330 million people in the US alone who need to eat every day, the government is going to make sure it happens, one way or another, live with it, figure out how to make a living in spite of it.
A minority of producers provide a majority of production. Most folks in ag are there as a lifestyle choice versus an economic choice. Take the government out of ag and you wouldn't have enough "farmers" to even keep a blog like this going. Ag has been a government subsidized entity since the beginning of humanity. Take some comfort in knowing that 30% of ag profit comes from direct ag subsidies. Enjoy it while it lasts, because some day you might well get your wish of reduced support.
Like the way you worded your comment. Lots of good usable machinery out there for entry level producers. Industrial agriculture has essentially become risk free.
