Grain drying costs
Folks,
Any thoughts on whether there will be a lot of grain drying in your areas this fall? What's your areas LP prices running right now? The word is that LP could be in short supply. What about where you are located?
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Grain drying costs
Not specifically answering your question.
But I’m a believer that phantom yield loss from field drying does occur although it is irregular and hard to predict.
With $5 corn, I’d say go get it.

Re: Grain drying costs
looked at one field of corn yesterday.
Filled clear to the end of cob, starting to dent.
Will let it field dry as usual, start HARVEST in 17% range and run aeration .fans occasionally.
Haven't dried corn with added heat for 25+ years.
Corn pulled out of two bins this week, one at 15.2 other at 15.0 .
Giving them no free over dried corn.
Would rather have my deductible expenses be for things like a new baler, maybe a nice side by side, or up grade the ol pickup instead of just a cancelled check for hot air.
Today's price at closest supplier
Propane $1.70
#2 diesel $ 2.48

Ha….a canceled check for hot air. Isn’t that what we get from Washington DC?

Re: Grain drying costs
Contract for 6k gal, LP. a few weeks ago $1.67... after that let it dry. Left a field until March one year, wouldn’t recommend it, however combined at 15% and still pretty good stand surprisingly. Selling water to the local elevator anyways.

Re: Grain drying costs
Interesting question marketeyeball....
Yes, LP is up on the "fear" of a potential shortage. Buying during a fear spike is usually, not always, but usually a bad plan.
To your question, all the corn out east was planted ahead of normal, we have had a lot of heat actually, corn is denting in mid-August, gives us the whole month of Sept for field dry down. Point being there will be no wet corn and most will come right out of the field and to the bin or the dump pit at the eplant, no LP required.
We contracted ours about 9 months ago, we might resell it back to them 🙂

Re: Grain drying costs
My experience with phantom yield loss is that it is highly dependent on the season, hybrid etc.
But particularly if there's a basis advantage to be had, I'd start picking at around 27% if you have on farm drying capacity, and get it moved.
Then probably move to beans and let the rest dry some more.

Re: Grain drying costs
Or if the elevators need corn and are offering 1/2 price drying.
