Hay Prices
I'm buying a field of hay from a neighbor. Doing all the work (mowing , raking, baling). Am making 50-55 lb. little square bales. What's a fair price/bale to pay?

Re: Hay Prices
If you want to be fair, buy it by the ton. Look at local hay auction prices and subtract the cutting and baling value from the total.

Re: Hay Prices
What are compareable bales bringing where you are? You might then take the total, divide by half and sent him a check.

Re: Hay Prices
Around here, they split big round bales 50-50 with the landowner, for doing the hay as you described, but for little squares, if you are doing all the handling of them, the guy doing the baling usually gets a little more, because small squares are more labor intensive. It used to be 50 cents a bale extra for the guys doing the work, but that was when a bale was only $3-$4
