House passes farm law extension

WASHINGTON –  The House has passed an extension of farm law until the end of January as lawmakers try to finish work on a new five-year farm bill.

Both the Senate and the House have passed farm bills this year, but they differ on how much to cut the nation's food stamp program and how to restructure farm subsidies.

The House passed the extension amid fears that the expiration of dairy subsidies at the end of the year will cause milk prices to rise. But Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has assured Congress that will not happen before the end of January.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said the Senate will not pass an extension because it is unnecessary.

Some senators argue an extension could reduce pressure to pass a farm bill.

It appears that the split in the Republican House majority is now fully blown open since Boehner has now rebuked the extremists for forcing the party the wrong way. I see no guarantee that this will lift the paralysis in Congress. But my bet is that Boehner's open criticism is not going to be retracted and he will not retrace his path of  representing a point of view he was probably not fully behind in the first place - but he certainly gave it his all up til now.

There still is no reconciliation of the food stamp/farm bill situation. And I don't think there is a solution until it is.

Good grief, food stamps don't cause the deficit. defense and debt repayment are the major items. food stamps might buy votes, tho.I've always wondered why food stamps are not administered throught the dept of health and human services.

It would seem your definition of "Extremist" would include everyone with a brain Palouse. No governement in history has survived unlimited debt and monetary debasement. None. To work to try and bring even a moderation of this fiscal mess is somehow  being

an "extremist". Demanding the FED be audited is extreme? Current policy has been the biggest transfer of weatlh per year to the big banks and investment types in all of history. Maybe you should stop listening to the socialistic press conferences by our "great Leader" and follow the money flows. $3Tril of bad bonds converted to pure cash by the FED is $3Tril in the pockets of the wealthiest folks on the planet. Zero interest doesn't help economic growth but it is a great transfer of wealth from the retired savers to the state.

And I am ignoring the full frontal assault on religious freedom.

This is going to end badly. Always does. We are positioned to do very well as the currency continues to be debased. It is unfortunate that the poor will be so badly hurt by this approach. We lobby to avoid this outcome, but no one cares. We are just too "extreme".

All Boehner has to do is let things come up for a vote and let people vote..... There are not enough extremest out there on either party to stop things if they make sense to the majority...... He has been trying to invoke the Hester rule and the minority has been trying him up in Knots...... Maybe he has tired of being jerked around..... p-oed

There is no assault on religious freedom. You are free to worship as you choose. In fact the taxpayer even subsidizes your church , your faith. Even though we may not agree with it.

What are you not free to do what you want to do? Impose your doctrine on the rest of us. Force the rest of us to listen to what you have to say. We subsidize your faith. We give tax exemptions on church giving. We exempt your church from state and county real estate taxes. We give your church free fire and police protection and we have to listen about how you are abused.

Aren't christians patriots? Don't they beleive that they should share the burden of taxation to support our federal state and county governments. Or do you think that just heathens ought to pay taxes.

It's bad enough we have to support your religious freedom but on top of tht we have to listen to you whine about being abused. Grow up and appreciate what you have.
