Re: How Much Corn Is In Storage? Too Much

Some of these pics show the damage done to surrounding structures.

Isc76cat,

You got an eye for this stuff,,, what strikes you most about the pictures?

For me, first was the proximity of the bin to a public Highway.

Re: How Much Corn Is In Storage? Too Much

The reason I mentioned the view available on Google Earth is the rust that is clearly visible.

I use that program to go "driving around" and it is surprising to see the road so close.

That highway must have been there when the bin was built so I wonder if they needed a variance.

You can also see the downspouts on the silos to the west of the bin.

Are they allowed to block the highway when using those spouts?

Shelter used for unloading grain into those silos was destroyed as well.

Always dangerous to speculate but I would guess some bolts on the ESE side of the bin failed.

Once one or more "pop" the stress increases on the ones next in line and failure happens quickly.

Bin sections look to be galvanized.  Stainless would be an expensive material for this application.

Disimilar materials will react chemically.  Even if the bolts/nuts/washers were galvanized to start with

once the galvanizing wears off the bolts will corrode.  Alot of hardware in this design.

Bin life could have been extended by blasting/re-spraying some years ago but that isn't cheap either.

Like the old saying goes, "Design is good until it isn't."

Yes, plus, I am wondering if the proximity to the highway encouraged corrosion from salt treatments.  Perhaps not.

Re: How Much Corn Is In Storage? Too Much

I'd think there is a good chance that doesn't go back like it was.

More may be lost than just that one bin.

A lot of force hit that concrete elevator and it's load out drive through structure....

collapsed the roof on it and blew out that east entrance.

Insurance decisions would be interesting to read.

Will be out of commission for a while.

Here's a little update from the local paper.

Sounds like they're making a pile close by.
