Re: How will weather influence planting progress?

Did he just say snow for northwest Iowa, this weekend? What are the agronomics of putting seed in the ground in too cold of soil. Not snow, but just too cold of ground? I know it's not a good idea, but is it possible to get by planting in colder-than-normal conditions?

Re: How will weather influence planting progress?

You can get by planting in colder conditions.  In 2009, the neighbors corn took nearly a month to emerge from the ground.  But there is a potential price to be paid if the seedling gets chilled. Assuming planting conditions are ok at the time the seed is put in the ground, I think the biggest danger comes in the first 24 hours after planting when a cold rain could chill the seed, resulting in stunted plants and an uneven stand.

I'm not big on replanting, so the soil needs to be around 50 degrees with decent temperatures in the forecast before we roll here.  But as the saying goes, "you have to get started early if your going to do it twice."

I think we will be planting later than average in this area based upon current conditions and the forecast.

Re: How will weather influence planting progress?

I would say that for us here in NC Iowa, the clock is still ticking to get a early start to the season. With all the rain this past weekend, the rain snow and cold forecast for this upcoming period, we are looking at nothing sooner than Easter and probably after which would be just fine. Alot of corn can be planted that last week in April or first few days in May. Last year spoiled us....MikeM

Re: How will weather influence planting progress?

I noticed Al Kluis mentioned to his customers Tuesday that snow is expected in southwest Minnesota Friday or Saturday. He sees a late planting season ahead.

Meanwhile, I have to say that it is beautiful in Chicago, this morning. it's a bit chilly but the sun is out and the grass is green, and very little 'chop'. I still would like to get off the concrete and into dirt, if anybody within 120 miles of Chicago is planting today or tomorrow. We can talk markets and planting right in the tractor cab. What do you say? Let me know.

It doesn't look as if we are going to get our usual 3 or 4 days of field work the last week of April if the forecast is right for Friday thru Sunday in NW Ohio.
