If every farmer held back 10% of his corn.....

Based on some of the latest  info that I have read..... If every farmer next year held off just 10% of there corn the market would just run out of corn...... Something to think about...... p-oed

I think if the banker would let us, we'd all hold all our corn off the market every year!

Sure would save the pain and suffering of having to make a marketing decision......

The thing about it, we would kill alot of demand at what price I would not know.

I'll buy that.  Or what about just not planting 5% or so of our more marginal ground.  Leave it for the wildlife and save on imputs.  Why continue burning through our resources at breakneck speed to depress prices, which just leads to significant waste of cheap food and chronic national obesity.   Nothing wrong with leaving something for future generations.

Even if you got a lot of people to go along with you it is not like the market would treat it as bushels that don't exist.  There are plenty of stats out there that give a pretty good accounting of corn in storage.  Both commercial and on farm.  If endusers start to feel like things are getting tight they are going to bid up resulting in a strong basis.  At some point which would probably be sooner or later the bids will hit a point where a lot of guys will blink.  That is how our market works.  If they know the corn is in storage they know that they can strengthen bids just a little from time to time to shake loose what they need.  They know that sooner or later the corn is going to come into the pipeline because the majority of farmers have cash flow needs and storage concerns for the next years crop.  That is a lot different situation than if the bushels just don't exist.  You aren't going to trick the market into giving you higher prices.

P-oed, it does make you wonder what would happen if we held it back and the populous knew we had it but wouldn't give it up. The one thing that no government would want. No one, us included, really knows the true size of the sword we are wielding.

I really believe that is why the government helps young farmers as much as they do and pays subsudies to smaller farms. If every farmer had a couple thousand acres and nice shiney bins we "could" in reality just hold on to the crops until we got the price we wanted. The STO's that cant store their grain and have to pay there bills at harvest help keep grain prices cheap..... sorry guys.
