Here's a partial list, BA
Get behind the Warren plan to forgive student loans. Go with Obama's plan for the first two years of college to be free, also.
Put everyone on Medicare , all US residents for sure...maybe the entire world ( I call that the "shifty plan"). Premiums of $120 per month...everyone saves a ton of money. Anyone see any down side to this one?
Expand secition 8 housing to include brand new automobiles, motorcycles, etc. This will really get GM and Detroit booming. Also, provide at least two months each year of vacations to exotic destinations. (Better buy up airline stock, those will boom!!!!!)
Every person gets a subsistance allowance of about $40,000 each year, but you do have to subtract any earnings from that figure. We don't want to overdo this largess, right?
Better buy stock in printing presses and ink mfc companies....the US Government will be printing money nonstop.
Free ice cream for everyone!!!!
Hows that for a good start?

Re: Red, you support my point
You are flat out wrong on taxes and the Dems. Obama has signed off on tax cuts for the middle class but he also wanted some restructuring of favors given to the wealthy during the Bush administration, and wound up compromising with the Republicans who would not repeal the favors to the wealthy.
What would I do, given a wand? Capital gains would be taxed as regular income - just like wages. I have no problem with long term investments (longer than 5 years) being adjusted for inflation. I'd eliminate the regulatory schemes that allow US companies to move 'profits' from US operations offshore using gimics that are virtually criminal - to the tune of billions for individual corporations. I'd eliminate other loopholes also in the area of tax shelters.
On the immigration claims I assure you that you don't understand of the basis of those. The agreement with Mexico wasn't about 'illegals' specifically but, high paid executives in each country that worked legally in the other country. US execs paid into the taxes of that country without getting benefit of retirements from that country - and not getting credit at home. Same for Mexican execs that worked in the US. An agreement was worked out that those who had paid in each other's systems without being able to ever collect could get a repayment. It worked both ways. Not many illegals make claims on SS under a correct number as citizenship is verified. And most illegals are paid under the table with no deductions.

Re: Red, you support my point
no Pal, a family of 4 can make up to about $50,000 and still collect earned income credits. Obama`s executive orders are resulting in about 5 million getting on the "pathway to citizenship" and they "file taxes" even throught they were paid under the table, they`re asked "So you and your misses made 5 bucks a hour and you think you worked about 4,000 hrs a year....hmmm good news you guys qualify for earned income and we`ll pay you for the past 4 years...here`s a $35,000 check, sorry that we can`t pay you interest too on that, but while you`re in the government office here I`ll show you where to sign up for ETB cards and if you want to go to college, we`ll pay that too, Be sure and sign up for all the goodies now!"
meanwhile there`s 14 million unemployed Americans and 14 million illegals, doesn`t anyone in the government know how to do math??? That`s a problem with a glaring solution right in front of everyone.

A) The whole matter is disputed and isn't currently in effect.
B) There's no mention of $35,000 being a magic number. It's definitely a stretch.
C) if Congress got off it's ass it all could be whatever they wanted, but they won't get off their ass, the House can't get a bill passed by the majority party and so if they want to cry crocodile tears they get no sympathy from me.
I think this issue is a new twist that I wasn't aware of, and i was referring to another agreement.
But, sit on your ass and you get what you get Call your Congressmen and ask them to do their job! They're getting paid quite a lot for crying and not doing their work. Even the farm welfare is going to be a year behind due to the inability of Congress to do anything at all.

Even so, this is a diversion from the discussion. If this country doesn't start supporting the middle class the effects will be long lasting.

Re: Red, you support my point
Well, there was a oil filter company in this area that paid really good wages and employed 400 people. A few years ago they got the bright idea that they could make cheaper oil filters in Mexico, so they "permenatly laid off" all 400 people and moved the plant to Mexico. Those 400 souls were left with nothing and had to scramble finding whatever they could like a part-time job clerking at Dollar General....
Just think about that Palouser, 400 people lost a job that afforded them a house, car, able to help with their kids college expense to basically competing for whatever low-wage job they could find, jobs that teenagers usually have as their "first job" now became a family`s `bread and butter` job. To add insult to injury the stuff that`s sold in those "dollar stores" is plastic, made in China crap.
It would perhaps be survivable if there wasn`t this welfare system that attracts foreign workers into this country. Now, Americans find that there are "jobs that Americans won`t do" taking advange of welfare "pays" better than any job that`s available.
Basically living wage jobs aren`t available to the middle-class. You either are one of the few that put on a suit and tie and make 6 figures or you have a job mowing their lawn, cooking their food and walking their dog....and less and less jobs inbetween.
JC Penny, Target and Sears are going broke, while Walmart and Dollar General are going gangbusters. Oh, specialty shops selling Rolex, Coach purses, Rock Revival jeans and Audi cars are doing well.

If we want the middle class to prosper once again in this country a good start would be for congress to get off it's arse and defund the EPA and allow our companies to compete on a level playing field with the rest of the world. Plus it would lower the cost of energy for the poor freeing up some of their capital for other things they might need such as an upgrade of the automobile they drive. Then there is that shovel ready project called the keystone pipeline the congress sent to the President that he saw fit to kill.

I would be against defunding the EPA as I don't think it is a problem for the middle class. If competing on a 'level playing field' means letting our commpanies pollute at the level of Chinese companies then the cost would actually be huge. China is finding this out. It would offer no help to the middle class except make quality of life go down.
As I've been pointing out, the middle class isn't going to buy cars because of lower fuel costs. And they aren't going to retail either. They want out of this game. This is not just a matter of savings on fuel. It runs deeper.
I realize it is apparently more obvious to me than others that we have a systemic economic problem with middle class economics. But the examples are out there as to where we're going. I suppose we could support the middle class with more subsidies like we do farmers but I don't think that's the way to go.
Congress HAS to get off it's ass and shows no sign of doing so. They're wasting time playing schoolyard games.

Re: Red, you support my point
I`m not saying this to be flippant, but if my voting ballot of 2012 won (Mitt Romney) and with the Republican majorities in 2014, we`d be in high clover right now, things would get done.
Let`s be honest here, Obama ignored the results of the `14 election and even though Republicans made historic gains, we still can`t override his veto. Obama is pushing the envelope on executive orders and for reasons I`ll be happy to on the forum page, nothing can be done about it.
Boehner and McConell have poor leadership, they act like if they lost the 2014 election, if your "Generals " are in full retreat there isn`t much hope to get anything accomplished.
I`ll say this as tactfully as I`m able, those that elected Obama didn`t do so for his financial prowess, he was elected by people that watch "American Idol" and read People magazine. A president is elected in a different manner than the state politicians, most people are happy with their own congresspersons but congress as a whole has only a 10% popularity.

Re: Red, you support my point
I think you are being flippant in demonizing Americans voted for Obama. They feel they have good reason for voting for Obama. Your point is certainly not a discussion of the economic issues.
In terms of markets you are definitely waling against a tremendous headwind. The economy started collapsing before Repubs left office when Bush left. WHAT would his party do different after that fact? If the present is any indication it would be nothing. There are NO ideas coming from the conservative side that appear to be aimed at solving the economic situation for the middle class. Most of the efforts seem more anti Obama than pro middleclass. Political prioroties need to be rearranged.
I will guess that high prices for beef with a crimp in cattle numbers will end soon as we discover that chicken and pork will make further gains as the middle class stagnates with even further consequences. In other words, playing politics is is going to result in further market downturns.
