Re: Labor Market
But then there`s articles about autonomous trucks and human truckdrivers out of business. Stores seem to be training us with self checkouts, one day you`ll be billed for items as you put them in your shopping cart, that is things you don`t buy off of Amazon. The labor shortage is short term, when the government runs out of ink to print welfare checks, in a few days there`s a switch between your bellybutton and spine that gets pushed when the stomach is empty and they`ll be looking for work.

Re: Labor Market
Oh, they`ll run out of money for farmers too, don`t worry about that. If there`s land to tax, farmers will pay more than their share of the burden.

Re: Take a look at the age distribution ....
Take a look at the age distribution of the US population compared to previously. Previously it was shaped like a Christmas tree, more younger people tapering to fewer as they aged. Today, it's a rectangle with a blunt taper at the top. People don't start dropping out of the population until they're in their late sixties and seventies. Not only that, young women today aren't going to make babies and raise them for free anymore, why should they?
If you want labor to keep this economy going, it needs to come from somewhere else.

Re: Labor Market
it's a different world now and has been for at least 10 years in how you need to hire and then retain the good ones. People want to be respected and compensated. They are not as willing and even as dumb as people used to be in regards to what they see and what goes on where they are employed. You can't be the boss riding around in a new pick-up every year and at the same time tell them sorry , no raise this year... They don't buy it like people would have in the past. High employee turnover is incredibly costly, and then feeds and builds bad reputation which escalates and turns into a never ending circle of the same problem.
For me it's better to have all my trucks rolling and paying more to that driver than to have a few sitting idle in the yard. The fastest way to lose paying customers is to not service their needs. You can only tell them no a couple times before they move on to someone else...
The drivers are the best recruiters a trucking company has , as long as the employer is running and maintaining a quality outfit that takes care of their employees. I have no trouble keeping my trucks full and rolling. My piece of the pie is a bit smaller but it's still a nice piece.

Re: Labor Market
I saw LinkedIn did a survey that wages are 4 th on list of what employees look for in a job. Flexibility is tops and I agree, if the company can let me take time off for farming, I`ll not bug them for as many raises. If a business absolutely has to have you there everyday 8:00am to after 5:00pm to turn lights on & off and lock & unlock doors, then they better get their checkbook out IMO.
