Looks like California getting drought buster
San Francisco hasn`t seen this much rain in their lifetimes. And we have a ice storm headed this way.
https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco/news/historic-rainfall-brings-san-francisco-to-its-knees/
Perhaps too much of a good thing?
snip:
SAN FRANCISCO -- The forecast proved to be prophetic. A Cat. 4 atmospheric river would bring copious amounts of rain to the San Francisco Bay Area. But no one was really ready for just how much would fall.
By the time the storm ended, San Francisco would receive 5.46 inches of rain over a 24-hour period.
"This makes it the second wettest day in the 170+ years of records at that site, just 0.08" less than 1st place (11/5/1994) with 5.54," the National Weather Service said. "This rainfall also made up 46.8% of San Francisco's December rainfall."
The result was a day of neighborhood flooding and and landslides.

Re: Looks like California getting drought buster
No drought buster here in sw Kansas, but we did get a little shower. As in a few hundredths. Maybe we can wait to start using this year’s water allotment. Supposed to be another shot this evening?

Re: Looks like California getting drought buster
Clayton, is SW Kansas ever really drought free for very long? Last year I hauled cattle in and out of SW Kansas. I had a breakdown in Dodge City and while my truck was being worked on me and my wife took a tour of the town. On one of the old main streets near the train depot was a sign that informed visitors of Dodge City's geography sitting on the 100th meridian. Like clockwork rain events always seem to spring up around or east of Dodge.... leaving west of the 100th meridian dry..... But the dry climate is part of the draw for cattle producers/investors that don't want their cattle finished out in mud lots east of the Missouri River.

Re: Looks like California getting drought buster
Actor Jeremy Renner was injured pushing snow at his Reno home. I`ve been listening to weather gurus, they say LaNina is fading, warm water coming into the Pacific and the US will get "atmospheric rivers" kinda like the Pineapple Express only a little north of Hawaii. They expect SW and Clayton`s neighborhood should get drought relief in later January and February.
I see nearby beans up 10¢, corn flat penny lower. Chip was talking to Gary Artac and he sees later in Jan, beans very bullish that is if they hold . I can`t recall the exact targets, so I better not say. I`ll probably dump mine this week, tomorrow (Wednesday) could be "turn around Tuesday" due to the shortened week.

Re: Looks like California getting drought buster
Gauged 1.30" this morning. I was expecting to see ponds in the fields with that kind of rain on almost frozen ground but didn't see any. After all the eating around here I need to market a few pounds, and the problem is I can't even give them away😐.
Going to the bank today to cash an equipment sale I made last week. I just have to kick the tax can down the road another year.

Re: Looks like California getting drought buster
Blacksand, the short answer is no, we are never drought free for very long. seems the last few years, though we go from one extreme to another. Like several months in a row where we get little to no rain, then the switch flips and we get rain every week, to the point of not being able to get in the field at all.And you do not want to plant or do tillage when the ground is too wet, especially right after the last rain for a couple months. The key is to store that"excessive" moisture so the crops can use it during the dry spells. And that gets more challenging all the time. Was talking with a neighbor and he said he does not remember a time before where we lost a wheat crop and the fall cropand the next wheat crop barely getting started. Of course we both are relative "newcomers" to this area. 30 years for me, less for him. So this idea that La Nina is fading is good news for this area.

Re: Looks like California getting drought buster
Took the shovel out last evening and wherever there is snow cover = no frost, just mush.
Rain/ice now - mid 20's for temp. Wind has picked up but nothing is going to blow around.
Tile not running but we'll keep an eye on it. Be interesting to see how long it takes.

Re: Looks like California getting drought buster
had about an inch day before it got so cold. Then a week of frigid cold temps then this warm up and now another strong inch. It all soaked in.
Since harvest ended over 5 inches of moisture, it all soaked in. Too muddy for me to want to check tile lines except for one yesterday that was piddling, and that was before last night's inch.
Should not be listed as droughty here.
