Lordy lordy oil is over $140 !!!!
Reports of gas $5 in california...went up another 40 cents here.
And those nice people at the elevator....they switched nearby contracts to july....saying, the nearby contract does not reflect the real market.....too much emotion in the nearby.....
But ya know, when they offload your grain sale....dollar for doughnuts, they get the nearby contract.....good way to make $1 a bu !!!
Now wait a minute....we own, and they work for us at the coop......right ????
Dont know if calling cftc would help or not.

Re: Lordy lordy oil is over $140 !!!!
The obvious answer is a Manhattan project for renewables, although that doesn't really exactly hit it.
The tech already exists, we just need to commit.
Regardless whether we're "energy independent" or just 90% as at the present, it is all still subject to the pricing of a global market.
Which is in turn subject to nice folks lie the Poots and Prince Bonesaw.
Renewables are price stable, and within our control.

A lot was within our control until the latest administration came on board.

Sleepy Joe, Heelsup Harris, and Dancin' Nancy.
Has the USA ever faced peril with a trifecta like those three as the top three?

Re: I'm not trying to be smart when I say, "when are you going to wise up?"
How many times does this have to happen before you guys finally wise up? Depending on oil to keep your economy going is a mistake. It is a scarce resource controlled by hostile countries and greedy companies. I'm not saying, "don't use any petroleum" but just don't let it become the thing you can't do without. The fact is, we burn 7 million barrels of gasoline per day essentially for personal transportation (aka automobiles & light trucks) that be substantially if not entirely replaced by cost-effective electric vehicles.
For example, using the four-year performance of my solar array here in the Northeast an acre of solar panel would produce the equivalent (assuming 25% thermal efficiency of the average current design gasoline engine) of 84,000 gals of gasoline per year, and cost about $1.4 million installed. 84,000 gallons of gasoline at $4 per gallon is $336,000 per acre giving a payback of 4.16 years. What other industrial activity can you invest in with a 4-year payback. And after the installation, there's almost no labor cost. One employee can manage acres of panels, acres!
Couple that with wind power to balance the supply and you can have a pretty reliable system. And if you use interruptible service contracts like all the natural gas companies use here in the Northeast for those occasional periods of low production can easily be managed. For example, here in the northeast, if we have a period of extreme cold and demand for natural gas for heat exceeds supply, the big factories just throttle back their gas use for few days. Nobody even thinks twice about it.
Supply management is a lot more preferable than going to war over oil, for sure.

Re: You guys in the Midwest, with all that wind, ...
.. you're sitting on a veritable gold mine. The current asking price here on 25 acres of wind farm lease is $15,000 per year. And you still get to farm 24 acres of it. $600 per year per acre is better than anything I've ever planted and no input cost or labor.
I could certainly stand the annoyance for that kind of money.

I would love to have several windmills....i can go to my pastures and see 2 wind farms, so I must be higher...but no interest....no high voltage lines for miles

Re: I'm not trying to be smart when I say, "when are you going to wise up?"
that 25% thermal efficiency is a false factor entered to make solar look better...... if the two were even close to being compared. You can store 84,000 gallons of fuel..... where do you store the electricity that equates.
"The fact is, we burn 7 million barrels of gasoline per day essentially for personal transportation (aka automobiles & light trucks) that be substantially if not entirely replaced by cost-effective electric vehicles" ---- If that were a possibility but so far electricity can't do that. The false pretense is easy to see through.....
elcheapo has a wonderful point --- the infrastructure to begin replacing gasoline and diesel to with electric is not in the near future..... or even the distant future unless we go nuclear extensively and the infrastructure and storage capabilities are still in a fully imaginative state.
