Machinery Pete on used market
He was on the radio with a Steffes auctioneer talking about the low inventory on dealer`s lots. I guess a dealer was at a consignment auction and bid a lot, but only got one tractor bought, he couldn`t keep up with the crazy farmers. Used to be advice was "go to a sale, don`t pay the premium at the dealer" now I think if the dealer has what you want you might buy it there cheaper.
I`ve been in the market for a 4960, few years ago they were $35,000, now they`re $60K. Howe at Hampton had a couple 8640`s but man they`re old. So, I bought a red tractor at Red Power, they had only 3 tractors on their lot, this was 6 weeks ago, I bought the last of the 3 and they haven`t replaced the inventory since. The salesman said "after you bought my last one, I don`t have a tractor to move machinery around, have to use a customer`s out of the shop". I jew`d the salesman down a couple thousand, but that was it and I`ll bet today they wouldn`t budge a bit on their price.
But what happened to all these tractors, did a bunch of them go to the salvage yards?

Re: Machinery Pete on used market
my 8520T JD went to the junk yard. Somebody before me overhauled the engine, I got to do the tranny two years in a row, right in middle of season. Next year rear end went out, again in middle of season. 6000 hr machine ... No durability
With what that was gonna cost and all the iron floating around back there, best option was to kill it.
Junk yard guy said they were getting lots of calls from dealers with late model machines with junk guts for sale.
NO MORE DANDELION colored machines around here with exception of a 980 field cultivator.
The 568 JD high blood pressure baler went away for a red one with yellow wheels in middle of hay season this summer. Bet my blood pressure is 15 points lower while baling now.
Seven AGCO tractors around here five of them have over 6000 hrs on them and several used on any given day.
Been using the two 3000 hr machines, one on the 13yd scraper and other on field cult last few days. Need to keep it up for a couple more weeks at least. Supposed to have another nice week next week.
Bought a new skid loader few weeks ago, hard to find. They sold both on the lot that day. The sale pitch "you want it or not?.

First two tractors I started out with, for the most part relegated to tractor rides and shows now, I did use the 2805 this fall pulling chopper boxes for a few days.
still use the 1155 to plant winter wheat. Less than $20k in them combined. Everything else is green and yellow , helps that a dealer is only a mile away.

Those are some straight Masseys. I wish there were more dealers around for other brands than Case IH and Deere. John Deere dealers have basically went to the multi site super stores, like the one at Grand Meadow, they closed Leroy site. Brakke in Mason City was the only single John Deere store I knew of and they were/are fantastic, but they too combined with Van Wall, which might be alright. I`ve never seen a bad John Deere store but there are a few Case IH stores I could tell stories about.

BA, if you are close enough to a Miller Sellner CIH Store in MN, those guys are top notch. The flagship store is in Sleepy Eye MN, and still owned by some Sellners, and they take pride in their heritage, along with having a staff that goes the extra mile for the customers.
I told a JD salesman years ago that if they wanted my business they should scrap the JD motors and start putting Cummins engines in their machinary, and the darned fools actually must have listened as I saw they had a four wheel drive tractor in production with a Cummins in it, while CIH went the Italian job route with a Fiat iveco lineup of engines for some time now.
I want to find a low houred 450 HP CIH Steiger, maybe 2500 to 3000 hours, autosteer, powershift, buddy seat, etc. Pre Def.
Anyone with a line on a nice one owner one, please let me know. I passed on the NH version, a Steiger 9040 in blue, for $152000 at a Marshall MN auction a couple of weeks ago, and it may have been the best deal out there. 2400 one owner hours, autosteer, looked brand new. My number was $147500 and I didnt go any higher.

Re: Machinery Pete on used market
Everything is crazy with iron these days. Few pieces of new machinery and, now, even fewer pieces of late-model machinery. Even cherry tractors, combines, self-propelled sprayers, planters and tillage equipment that are long in the tooth are selling at premium prices. This is the situation now. But it will change in a couple of years. Manufacturers will start getting the supplies they need to make new machinery and will begin to meet all the demand . . .and then some. And this will re-populate late-model used equipment inventories. At that point prices will drop. But right now . . .well, unless its a tractor or combine you can't live without and if your budget is tight, I would spent money on parts and service this winter and get through the planting season with the machinery you have on hand. But if you need a new tractor or planter get a purchase order into your dealer ASAP.
