I don't know, at this point, since I am not selling either until the price goes up above cost of production. Selling at a loss doesn't appeal to my capitalistic instincts.

I do know that I am not going to eliminate planting corn from my operation. I remember what my father quoted my grandfather as saying about not planting corn (this is in southern MN). Grandpa said that you might not plant corn one season, but that would be the only year you did that cause you would be out of business for the next year.

I think it's true you can't quit corn. I almost did, but with everybody reducing plantings in my area and potential tw issues in some areas basis is really really good and beans have started to lose their premium. I think we have high yield corn for the most part, and at high yields corn may play out slightly better

After what was discovered in my three time flooded corn fields yesterday...and the 50% flooded bean acreage...

My " most revenue" will be from crop insurance.   I'm the poster boy for why to carry it. Looks to be my largest claim ever.

At this years yields and cash  prices on this date in 2014, my corn crop will out gross my soybeans by $100 per acre. So it appears that there isn't much difference except if we weren't fertilizing for 200 bushel corn we would not be harvesting near 60 bpa soybeans.

If too many decide that the bean prospects look less risky they might over do it and a forward contract of $10 beans might be a good strategy. Hopefully we get enough price improvement to keep folks planting corn.

I don't understand your statement about fertilizing for 200 bu corn and that making you have 60 bu beans. You wouldn't think there would be much N carryover and would that affect the soy yields?

It's the general fertility of the field that makes the difference in soy yields. When you  spread a ton of dry fertilizer pre corn planting it is not all available the first year. It's the carry over fertility that enhances the bean production so I have been told.

It's not that I disagree, it's that I didn't quite get what you were saying. I do now. We normally put on P and K for two years and that, I think is what you indicate. I've spoken to many farmers, especially some years back that didn.t think you needed fert for beans. They were "free" as far as fert was concerned. Kind of how some farms ended up being mined.
