Mother Nature's Way
Most farmers on this site know about Mother Natures sense of humor and the fact that
She is in charge.
Most times she has a way of fouling up the best laid plans of Men and Mice. Take last year for example... Started out as the fastest paced spring in many a moon. What happened then you ask? Well many planted maybe the better part of a month early. How'd that work out? Well lots of replant and crops too far along for the late season rains that followed one of the hottest and driest mid summers in decades.
She has a way of being average by extremes...
OK last year for most was 2 hot, 2 dry, for 2 long. That is a number 6
The problem I see coming is to get a nice average 'ol Ma Nature needs
to be 2 wet, 2 cool, 2 long, for most of us. (she might not be done with that other #6 deal for some out west).
After a long wet cool spring we will get a cool summer with decreased heat units and crop dry down issues, harvesting delays due to mud, and a early frost event as bonus points. Just a reverse mirror image of last year, still a # 6.
Don't you just love averages and the view from my Harbor Freight Crystal ball?

Re: Mother Nature's Way
Since we are talking about Mother Nature. When the big California earthquake hits, How much will the grain markets fall? Should I sell now or wait? Please use your Crystal ball. The light in mine broke after I threw it against the wall.

Re: Mother Nature's Way
Nice post Hobby, averages are what the powers that be(the trade) need for a trend line, however almost all need to have that average to better croping condition>Is it ever going to happen again, probably yes,but this year for some reason still seams a little strange for all to hit near trend,or even close to trend.I guess I am to much of a beleiver in good sub soil conditions!

Re: Mother Nature's Way
Mother nature is having her way in North East Wis. There is a great amount of ponding or flooding on wheat and alfalfa fields. Frost still in the ground and damage will be done. Last fall the wheat and hay fields looked very good.

Re: Mother Nature's Way
hobby,
I hear you --this winter's been completely different--trend is wet now, no doubt....and the long range guys were NOT forecasting hot/dry summer last yr. even when the TREND was dry/warm..
So your thinking they're wrong again w/ forecasting hot/dry this coming summer?
i suppose they could be using the fore-historical-model

Re: Mother Nature's Way
Hobby I think I got the USDA government issued crystal ball. It predicted a great weather year, 163 bu yield and fall prices well below cost of production for 2 years now. I like your crystal ball better LOL!

Hobby - How's your river doing? For the first time since last June there is water flowing in the county ditch that runs thru our farm. (SCMN) All surface runoff since it will take some time for the ponds to work thru the frost and get to the tile. We got about .6" of rain last Friday/Saturday which sure took the snow down. Much more towards Rochester.

Re: South Podunk Country's near term official forecast
Was up to 2/3 full day before yesterday but this cold weather has helped and it has dropped 3+ feet. Lots of the 4 to 5 inch think ice melted or broke up and that helped too.
Supposed to warm up and I am planning on tapping quite a few more maple trees along the river bank Going to be interesting getting to them with the 4 wheeler. Tree juice boiled down is a little slice of heaven on earth.
