If you have 900 cases and only one death your county is to congratulated because you're doing extremely well.

On average of the 1,550539 positive cases of coronavirus there have been 91,985 deaths or 5.93%.  So you would expect there to be 53 deaths in your county. 

  On the other hand, our county with a population of 37,500 (approx) has had 64 cases and 1 death so with 900 cases maybe you're not doing quite so well to control the spread.  By the way, that one death was a traveler who got off the interstate because he was too sick to proceed.  Guess what, our first 37 cases was on a big dairy farm with communal housing.

I actually agree with BA on this one, not that this vaccine will necessarily be the one but that we need to try and keep a positive but realistic attitude at times like these.

  It's sometimes hard to keep a positive outlook when we know that very likely 150,000 people will have died simply because "our" president deliberately ignored and suppressed the multiple frantic warnings for purely political reasons until it was far too late.

  I mean, it's disappointing &  discouraging that the leader of this country cared so little about the thousands of lives lost, and yet be lost, as to make the short-sighted selfish decisions he did.

rickgthf, I'll start by saying we have a serious problem, not denying that. However we can't figure deaths at 5.93% because we don't know how many cases there are. Local hog plant(made the news) tested their workers, 45% positive. 90% of that 45% asymptomatic so it is not accurate to use just the positive tests as the numerator in calculating a mortality rate.  In that plant of the plus minus 1200 testing positive 12 were hospitalized, 11 already released, and 0 deaths. These numbers can't be used country wide either, just saying not enough info to say 5.93%.  We simply don't know how many actual cases.

Best math from all the data would suggest a mortality rate of around 1% of all infections- 10-20X normal seasonal flu. That's zeroing in a little tighter after a lot of kerfuffel over early serological stuff, etc.

But sure, in a younger and relatively healthy population like packing plant workers, it is going to be substantially lower than that. Actually maybe not a lot more than what the seasonal flu is for the general population. That's vanishingly small in this sort of a population.

Not insignificant mortality aside, there are other reasons for younger healthy people to not want to get it. Not being a spreader would be one but the serious lingering health effects that are considerably more prevalent would be another.

In the quest to find a solution, we have to look at diet as a factor. There`s a doctor claiming that Italy got hit hard because they are big on pasta and bread, he`s one of the "Gluten free" proponents (not saying yea or nay on that, I like my bread & pasta).  But the so-called "South Korea and Germany miracles"  much of that may be accounted for their rice & bean diets.   I would be interested on those in this country that follow Gluten free diets because of Crohns and Colitis on their susceptibility to Covid19.

We both know it is all in the testing and how the testing is targeted..... testing has been manipulsted from the start to build this into a "crisis" to be used politically.

First only advanced cases were tested, no symptoms no tests ....  The stuff you quote that makes it look like a serious (like 6%)problem comes when you slide those ratios into the general public to build fear --the old political slight of hand--- really stupid use of data...  but most lunatic democrats will fall for that.

On our county basis...... we have a meat packing plant..... which was invaded by third party hired employees of federal employees to go after those red neck farmers.   Lock down testing of every human and pet.   Guess what young crowd  and just as those crisis mongers thought they found 40% positive tests with absolutely 0 symptoms or cases.(turns out you could test 1000 barn cats and get a 40% positive test--- or one barn cat or factory worker tested 1000 times... same result )...  but the fear building trump haters spin that every way necessary for their goal.   Now they quote 400+ cases in a county where the hospital sits waiting for this load of sick folks (at one point 17 were counted at the hospital--Patients not virus treatment...............crisis  never comes....... National guard has the families who tested negative under guard at the community college..... still no cases....... Rick your not an idiot.... you are a promoter of this and you and i both know this will end after the election in november.  

the virus is real as all viruses are and on any normal year respritory problems will kill 156000 US citizens...... but not this year --- all of those will be counted as covid-19 deaths to build the fear and the profit from our stupid lipstick congress (not so stupid when election results are sought at any price)

The packing plant is down to one shift and kill is half what it normally is not because it had the virus, but because 30% of the work force stopped going to work because they believed the lie that it was a hot spot for the virus and they did not want to get sick.

Was your whole county tested.......???      Probably not...  So a Dairy farm was targeted for effect...... and with 37 positive tests probably 70-100 were tested........ The usual 40+% false positives.  Of those 37 how many have ever had symptoms??  probably none.  Or one maybe 2 can be forced to cough on demand.

Since only one death in your county -- I am guessing that elderly patient who may have died of anything this year was not a dairy employee.    ??

But how many days of production did the dairy loose?   How many good employees were lost because of the political "labeling" of their employer as a "hot spot" ?????   How many future good employees will never apply???  How long will this business last "for the good of the party"?

There is no question in my mind that the US will have far greater loss financially and personally by the politicizing of this "virus" phobia that any caused by the actual virus....  

IMO the US has everything it takes to avoid this in natural distancing and "less folks shoulder to shoulder in the streets" than anywhere else in the world...without a panic change of lifestyle.    The virus has to be targeted in this country in one major city and red meat plants and dairies( as you say) in order to try to make it look like a crisis.

Keep comparing the local deaths and ventilator cases to average years and worry when the numbers exceed normal deaths...... 

The only thing sure at this point is that normal deaths will be down ............ because they were falsely counted as covid-19 deaths because of the date of death not cause.

Why was the elderly florida population not decimated?   Why was california given a pass?  Don't they have meat packing?  Compare the number of direct chinese exposures in california to those of New York by the plane load.  Emense exposure in California.

We need a virus that strikes politics.  Because Political liars are using this one against their own country!
