Planting intentions straw poll

We're conducting a planting intentions straw poll (full story) of farmers attending the Commodity Classic in Nashville. The poll's been conducted exclusively on our mobile website, m.agriculture.com.

It's been a little hard to find a farmer here who isn't planning on expanding corn acres this spring. But, we're also getting a sense that people may be reconsidering--if they have the flexibility.

The poll itself is telling a different story-- "more soybeans"--if we're all being honest about our responses.  In any case, seems like there could be a fair amount of drama yet in these decisions?

Thoughts?

Half corn and half beans here John and that won't change.

Re: Planting intentions straw poll

50/50 corn and beans. With the price of corn relatively flat compared to beans I doubt many will change rotations around here. Soybeans have been to reliable to switch to more corn in my case.

Re: Planting intentions straw poll

51% corn........49% beans

Was just the opposite last year.

And I'll be farming in all 52 weeks this year and hoping my corn averages 187.       Smiley Wink

Re: Planting intentions straw poll

70-30 in favor of corn. Up about 5 percent on corn from last year. Didn't have any yield drag on c/c acres last year. I attribute that to going to a chopping head and using fungicide. Plus I hate that bean dust.

Re: Planting intentions straw poll

Have been 100% corn last 3 years Looking at 1/3 beans 2/3 corn unless N drops a lot in the next 2 months.

50-50 except that I will move one 30 acre lower field into COC.  Going 50-50 on another field means some COC there, as well, as it was all corn last year.

However, I'm watching the weather and reserve the right to change.  I'm not locked in by fertilizer or pesticide.

Re: Planting intentions straw poll

60%corn 40% beans   An increase of 20% on beans.  Trying to pump less water to recoup from last year.  Beans took the heat better on less water.

Re: Planting intentions straw poll

60% corn, 35% soybeans, 5% wheat.  Part of the beans will be double cropped after chopping rye.

Not really a change in response to the grain markets as much as to the cattle market.......gives me more corn to feed and more stalks to bale.
