Raining hard in Brazil & other commodities
For your Sunday morning reading here -- looks like it's raining like crazy down in Brazil. So, what do you think? Is this going to fire up the bulls even more?
Another thing I noticed this morning, in clicking through our newswire, there's a fair amount of stuff on there about on there this morning on the metals and other commodities, namely copper and aluminum today (and gold, of course). Just interesting to me to see that stuff -- I tend to get wrapped up completely in the grain and livestock trades and sometimes forget about those other commodities. Do you keep an eye on things like copper and aluminum when you're filling up your marketing info toolbox? Does watching those other commodities help you with your grain marketing?
Just something that's swirling around in my thick noggin this morning. Hope everybody's staying warm today!

Re: Raining hard in Brazil & other commodities
I don't think the area mentioned in the report that is getting heavy rain (along the coast) is soybean country. It's a big country. I would think most areas in beans could tolerate rain at this point.
As for industrial commodities like copper, etc, no I don't take them into account marketing grain as I believe they a minor signal.

Re: Raining hard in Brazil & other commodities
You're absolutely right, Palouser. The areas mentioned in the article are not very representative for the Brazilian agricultural production. The very same rains that devastated entire cities in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo states are actually favoring grain crops in other states such as Mato Grosso and Parana. Hot and wet, the weather has been pretty good for crops so far. In fact, local private consultant firms are all revising upward their estimates for corn and soybeans production. If the weather continues to favor crops, the country can harvest over 30 mmt of corn and almost 70 mmt of soybeans. After that USDA report last week and with everything that’s been going on in Argentina, I sure hope so. Otherwise, things could get pretty complicated next season.

Re: Raining hard in Brazil & other commodities
Glad to hear from you. I was in Brasil in Jan, 2002. Landed in Sao Paulo as a base and we went to to Parana Dutch colonies, to Brasilia and the ag ministries, then down to Curitiba. Had I been 25 years younger I might have thought about staying 😉 As it is I'm watching the ice break up on the river below the house and go out for the second time this season, and been snow shoeing for exercize. Dreaming of summer.
