Re: The blowback and economic consequences of the trump presidency will...

The blowback and economic consequences of the trump presidency will haunt us for years.  The answer to international competition is to "compete", not to wall yourself off.  My nephew is a software engineer working for a major defense contractor just couple of years out of college. They got him working all hours on multiple projects because they just can't hire enough qualified people.  You want to know why there's pressure to hire foreign workers, it's because Americans can't be bothered to train for the available jobs, it's "too hard" & "too much trouble".

I would love to have more of the economic consequences of 2019 before the Chinese communist party released that virus on the world.  I mentioned in January that I planned to take my 27% return on investments and move the risk off the table.  Doubt I will get that return again.

After living with the weaponized virus the last two weeks and seeing our federal healthcare spread it instead of preventing it....... I don't care what happens to china or the companies that do business there..... including Deere.  I don't need social media.

Every poker game needs a "mark", I`m sure they won`t have to much trouble finding a seat for ol` Uncle Sam at the table.

The U.S. had been the recipient of screw jobs by international trade for years....maybe even decades.  President Trump's actions were directed to level the playing field.   Sure it took a while, but look what has happened to the agriculture trade with China.

It's too bad the U.S. is now destined to going back to cowering to foreign trade.  Obama's apology tour will take a back seat to what's coming.

Once it was apparent that the Simpleton Caucus had taken control of the narrative I figured that TPP wouldn't sell, even though it was a great deal for "agriculture."

Actually as much geopolitical as economic, which is a lot better than a bunch of knuckleheads rattling sabers over China while we're getting our clocks cleaned.

Re: The blowback and economic consequences of the trump presidency will...

First off, the political ability to sell any sort of trade agreement that is even remotely reciprocal was a boat that sailed a while back. Any such thing would require very serious offsets for American workers and we've just had another election that has fairly decisively stated that we're against SOCIALISM!!!!

Workers aren't entirely wrong. NAFTA (and NAFTA v. 2.0) and WTO have made the US wealthier, but the way the entire game is rigged, 200% of it went to the top- including wealthy farmers (true, although not a large portion of the whole).

But anyway, had we been willing to set up policies that would distribute those gains to workers instead of money people, then we could have locked up the Pacific Rim against China, then approached Europe and gotten a united front against China on WTO and some of their other ambitions.

Oh well, just a counterfactual "what if" now, the opportunities are beyond squandered.

The basic logic was that since smart and somewhat honest people made such a mess of things, why not try some dumb and dishonest ones?

Worth noting that other than the mild exception of the last 8 years of it, the US won the Cold War by clinging to the mild socialism of the New Deal and keeping the majority on board.

Although that began to fray inexorably in the '60s over the issue of whether socialism should be extended beyond the white people for whom it was intended.

But I’ll admit to not being an economist in terms of having advanced degrees in the discipline.

On the other hand I do know more about it than Larry Kudlow, who also doesn’t.

He just played one on TV.
