Re: There will be less corn needed

Mnvtfarm yes it does get sickening.... I think that's what you meant..... I had to consult my ECIN Publication "houw to spiel for dumies! Secount edition" yep sicking equals sickening. 😉

It seems now farmers are pitted against one another more and more. And it seemingly is getting worse as farms become less and less diverse. Why does the livestock farmer need to struggle for the crop farmer to profit? Or vice versa?

Re: There will be less corn needed

Telling us ethanol is to blame for a blizzard that was a catastrophe for the cow/calf high country is just a tad different than guys pouring new lots and putting up new barns and buying 22k ground. Sorry but you are grasping t straws and coming up empty

Re: There will be less corn needed

And what good does that "subsidized cheap corn" do them now? And you must have made money at $1.50 or $2 corn..... Your still farming and growing corn.

I'll wait for MT, hobby and farm hawk to take you to task for your comment. That is more insensitive to them then my comment. You do understand some of these ranches lost most all their income right? It'd be like a prairie fire burning all the corn and beans in your area right before harvest and you not having crop insurance.

Re: There will be less corn needed

"Breaking Clean" is a memoir of Judy Blunt's life growing up on a ranch in Montana and her later life as a ranch wife.

Her recounting the great blizzard of '64 and her father's heroic but mostly unsuccessful effort to save what he could of their herd  is tough to read.

It's harsh country.

Don't think that my inconvenience in having to get up twice a night to fuel the generator during the month long power outage from the '91 ice storm quite compares.

MT: I Never blamed ethanol for the blizzard. Can you not comprehend what you read?

Most here believe ethanol is king and don't really care about the livestock industry. Read the posts....

Re: There will be less corn needed

Wow! You think MT has a reading comprehension problem? Look in the mirror. First of all I said nothing disparaging about the poor people out in South Dakota. I absolutely feel sorry for them. Feeling sorry for these people and the livestock industry as a whole in regard to feed costs the past five years are two very different things. I survived the $1.50 and $2.00 corn fiasco. Did I make much money? No. The livestock industry did though while enjoying my cheap subsidized corn. You're bitter about the price you had to pay for corn the last few years. I get that. We were told for years to find a market for all our extra corn. We did in ethanol. Why don't you try doing the same?

Re: There will be less corn needed

I don't understand dairy mentality ---------- I have yet to hear one on here rail about the teachers and healthy living community who have contested for several years how bad red meat and dairy are for health.  Our school boards and administrators have been listening to them,  why does dairy keep still.  Count the number of gallons of milk that go through the check out line compared to the 12 and 24 packs of soda in an afternoon.  Milk is cheaper but not many going through the line can figure that out.

----------------------------------------

Point is -------- seems to me that dairy has bigger problems than cost of inputs.

Fat cattle sure do------- cost of corn is not why the herd is down ------ not because of pastures have been broken out to raise 200 bu corn.  Three years(in some areas 5-8 years) of drought has taken more cows out of the herd than all the other reasons combined.

------------------

observation ------- for years I watched feedlots adjust inventory up and down based on the ability to feed at a profit.  Yet last year at $7+corn and high feed,  for several months,  We just kept feeding.  If a lot emptied a few pens it was because they couldn't find the cattle.  And several lots started feeding holsteins instead of the feeders that were not available.

Sure makes a difference who owns the cattle in the pen, doesn't it?

Death loss from weather is a bad diseaster, but in some of the high plains pasture countries it has been dry so long that we may see some very extreme events repeat for a few years ----------- assuming we haven't repealed the law of averages.

--------Wait,  that may just not work anymore with out a government employee to administer it-     ------- the law of averages.......
