There will be less corn needed

Hearing reports in Western South Dakota of cattle dying in the blizzard of wet heavy snow. 3 to 4 feet and up to 90% losses in some isolated areas and herds.

A friend of mine sent me pictures...... How unbelievably sad. It takes two years at minimum to get the nations cattle herd back to where it was...... and some are thinking of getting out of cattle all together.



But hey who needs cattle. Ethanol is going to save us all.......

Pretty horrible deal

Life altering event. Very sad. Such a helpless feeling. That's a lot of snow very quickly.

As for your comments dfmn. Pretty sad you needed to loop your own agenda into this tragic deal.

Guess what. Pretty sure someone is going to raise beef, just like someone is going to milk those cows and someone is going to raise that pork and poultry.

Question for you, are you in livestock? Your handle would suggest yes, however as with many others that come and go it's simply not the case.

Dman I have to agree with MT on this one. Ranchers out there are not only dealing with a catastrophy on their bottom line, the cattle did not deserve this either.

sorry to burst your buble but it is NOT a 2 year turn around on the cattle herd thing. It takes 2 years just to get the hiefer to calf then another year and a half to two years to get a finished calf to the meat counter. that's four years and Many will wash out of the system if you keep everything.

Bad bad deal these early fall storms, part of the reason I am now living on the farmstead I am now. The farmer who owned it before us lost a whole flock of turkeys almost ready for market way back in the day to a early fall snow/ice storm, he never did fully recover(financially or mentally)I am told. 😞

How much effect will a isolated incident like this really have on the world wide demand for corn?

yes I am a dairy farmer. Also have a small cow calf herd. So am in livestock. I've been to a 1000 cow dairy hit by an EF5 tornado. Was there shortly after it happened. One of the most horrific things I have ever saw. I would imagine this to be similar, all be it on a larger scale.

As for my ethanol comment...... MT and others, I would suggest you go look yourselves in the mirror before you start making judgement of me. For two years most of the posts on here pretty much said "heck with the livestock industry we don't need 'em". How many times in the last two years has MT or others, said "those livestock guys had our cheap corn for all those years, who cares if they make money, its our turn" or told livestock guys to "sell the cows if you can't make money" when they complained about corn/feed prices????? And your going to tell me my comment, which was meant tongue in cheek, is worse than that???? Whatever. With a double eye roll.

BTW, those livestock guys don't have anything like Gov't subsidized crop insurance to protect then either......

But df, since the inception of the loan rate the US livestock people have been telling us they are feeding everything but corn if the price gets over loan rate...and they will buy us out and raise the feed themselves if does. Gets sicking don't it? No eye roll.

They might not of had anything like subsidized crop insurance but they sure as hell enjoyed government subsidized $1.50 and $2.00 corn for many years.
