Just selling a big wad of token farm stuff while the trade deficit explodes is a lose/lose for the US.

Ag goods would be an essential part of an actual long term trade agreement.

The Chinese played it smart- as they tend to. They stayed out of the election and gave Trump a bone with some farm purchases just in case, while making no serious, enforceable commitments.

No point in giving in to them right up front.

As has always been the case, any real improvement is going to require multi-lateral pressure.

There’s a lot going on right now but we might be inching back to where we can get some cooperation from allies.
