Unintended consequences

"Leftist" candidate Lopez Obrador is currently leading polls for the 2018 Mexican election with a platform to increase economic independence, particularly reliance on US corn and gasoline*.

That's a long way off and the status quo PRI seems to always manage to pull it out somehow.

A resurgence of Mexican nationalism wasn't hard to predict, though.

Corn and HFCS imports after NAFTA have been a significant contributor to the immigration wave.

*Koch, and other refiners. Even though we may be net importers of MX crude, they have a very good deal going by refining a witch's brew of discounted heavy oil and oilsands kerogen and NGLs. Not an altogether bad thing as a major part of the surge in US energy production has been Refinery Gain, where 2+2=5.

Re: Unintended consequences

You mean the $63 billion trade deficit we run with Mexico does nothing for them??? When the NAFTA first came along, liberals (friends of Bill) would argue that NAFTA would lift up Mexico and we wouldn't get illegals...how'd that work out?

But I doubt many of the 30 million illegals are displaced Mexican corn farmers.

Re: Unintended consequences

If 3 billion people can't get enough corn they'll bid it to $7.  If 3 billion people have more corn than they want, they'll let it drop to $3.  Supply and demand.

Re: Unintended consequences

Political bunk.......

Mexican crude is imported because they don't have the refining capacity.  It has to go somewhere it can be processed.
