Weather, Winter Wheat And Next Spring

What kind of shape is the winter wheat crop in?  Some danger, from what I read?  And what will that do to crop planting decisions for next spring?

Soil and subsoil moisture is still inadequate in many areas, according to this state by state breakout.  Where do you sit?  Iowa needs some more soaking rains but with winter coming it looks like we'll go into spring still with serious subsoil shortages.

"Summary:

Most Cornbelt states are still in drought conditions, with very low levels of top soil moisture and general absence of moisture in the subsoil. The issue now becomes whether there is enough moisture for the winter wheat crop, and that is questionable."

Re: Weathe, Winter Wheat And Next Spring

Another post by Jim when it gets slow on this board.  I wonder how much he gets paid per post or per month?  You do have some good posts Jim, I must admit.

Re: Weathe, Winter Wheat And Next Spring

I read a lot of posts from various land grant universities and other sites and like to repost them here to see what a group of working farmers has to say abou tthem.  Most of my neighbors don't read this stuff, so where do I go to get opinions on it?  I've seen some very good commentary on this site from time to time and the only way I get it to come out is to ask the question.,

And, I'll admit that sometimes I like to poke in there amongst you with a sharp stick and see who bellers.  🙂

Jim keep up the posts.  Your questions, for me, are helpful in looking at the big picture.

I had a cow that must have belonged to Jim   🙂

Wheat out west has a start but is getting bluer on the windy days.  Living on top 4 inches with moisture-------nothing below.  Will not last long in this mild weather if the fronts blow in dry.    Locations north of hwy 50 are worse.

Re: Weathe, Winter Wheat And Next Spring

I just got back from a 1666 mile loop out through Ne, Ks, Ok, North Tx. Most of the wheat is small... not so much danger of frost damage next spring as it is small. only saw one area with adequate moisture. Emporia Ks. area had a few terraces with water in them. Just a very few areas with emergence issues. Amost all need rain and snow to raise anything.

The best wheat was in SW's area under pivots.

Re: Weather, Winter Wheat And Next Spring

Jim - have you heard of some irrigation development in your area - have heard a hint of that from a well drilling outfit here in Nebraska or is it some more coffee commotion ---
