Weather

Not exactly sure what to think or say about this weather.  2.25" Friday night, and it's raining cats and dogs again.  Wheat quality just continues to deteriorate.  I'm sure before long we'll be sprouting in the head which reduces all grain to feed quality only.  I know were only a small slice of total production, but this crop just cannot catch a break.

Re: Weather

We've been trying to harvest for 2 weeks, but we've received about 6" of rain over the past week. Normally we would be done by now.

Re: Weather

I hear you shaggy. I just want to get
seed wheat at this point.
The cooperative really really fouled
Me up on not getting stuff done when
Needed. We have spent millions on
Equipment, and have a small army but
Seem they can't get it together.

I am getting a sprayer.

Re: Weather

I was very fortunate enough to save a load of seed wheat from one of the first fields I cut.  I just had a gut feeling with the way the weather was going I should save some and darn good thing I did.  It was certified seed when I planted it and was weighing right at 62# at 11% moisture when I harvested it.  I only wanted about 1/2 a truck load but I saved almost a whole load.  Could pay dividends later in the fall.

Re: Weather

Guys, sprouted wheat is fine if you germ test and adjust... Usually germ is higher than you think

Re: Weather

Tell that to the guy at the terminal with the checkbook.

Would you buy seed corn that is starting to sprout?

Re: Weather

It's up to you. This is wheat not corn. It doesn't need to be precise like corn. You can still get 10-20 plants/ft on partial sprouts. Just adjust the math

Re: Weather

I hear what your saying 89, but this isn't my first and I hope it isn't my last cropping season.  I know planting less favorable wheat seed isn't the end of the world, but why would we want to.  I like to give the crop every advantage I can, starting off with pregerminated seed is less than ideal in my opinion.

Selling sprouted seed deems you a discount at the terminal as well.  Why would they pay going rate for a product that could only be marketed as feed.

Is this the end of the world?  No, but it definitely is a wheat season that I'm anxious to put behind me as soon as we can get back into the fields.
