What's a poor boy to do ?

howdy all.

well, been looking over stuff.......reading...etc.........

things just don't look good......grain in bunkers all over.....bunkers being built now for the fall harvest.  I have to admit,

the dryland corn looks good.  I've never raised dryland corn. In our neighborhood, my grandpa said if you raised 60 bu

corn, you did something.  I can't get over how good it looks......but i also can get over how much money is out there.

granted, not planting at high population, maybe 18 to 24,000, but still, corn seed is high......then some herbicides....

most of it is clean as a whistle, so i'm guessing they used lumax or lexar, which if you do it yourself, about 32 an acre.

they also run over it with glyphos, so another $3.........then some phos and n fertilizer, which i would guess at

35 to 40...id guess maybe 10 for crop insurance, don't know....... so about $130 an acre.........and i was hearing

about 100 to 120 an acre....now you have to share with landlord........can't see where you are setting the world on fire.

milo is simular in costs........seed cheaper, but now you have to spray for sugar cane aphids, so about $15 or

better an acre.......

soybeans......out here in the "hills"  35 bu beans is pretty good.........but numbers don't look good

so what's left.......maybe plant some sudan or millet ?   if you can get rid of it

sunflowers....oh i would like too, field is pretty........and now they have the midget one's about 4 foot

tall or so...but with seed about $325 a bag for seed.....and only about $15/cwt......not alot there either.

alfalfa.......takes a year or better to get it going........don't even price roundup seed......

newsome from dtn just un-invited himself from the kansas wheat growers assn annual meeting.....last night on

market to market....he said we don't need a wheat crop this comming year.  He also asked the question.....

why not fallow this year ????   well i can understand why he said it......but what are we to use for money for the next

year ?

so, if you make $50/ acre....do you go ahead and plant ?

one thing tho.....i would some how lock in the price......but also do it so that if it goes up, you have upside ability.

so..........what's a poor boy to do ?
