Re: Whats your cop for next year

This question  is rather meaningless, I still don't know my cop this year. Harvest isn't over here yet.

Bills still to be paid for repairs yet to happen etc.

You want cop for next year?  What is the fert price, seed price, fuel price, repairs, and a host of other things?

Only thing I am confident of  is it will be under the crop insurance guarantees whatever that turns out to be.

Want to guess on that one too?

Re: Whats your cop for next year

We're in the a high basis area for corn and a low basis for beans.  So corn is hard to walk too far away from.

But it is always hard to count all the costs.  Most don't.

Re: Whats your cop for next year

SW it just got worse than I imagined, had the top insurance dude for the state of Iowa for the company I insured with call me and ask to come see for his self my mess.

Flood damaged beans are to be destroyed, how is still open for debate, way too muddy and the beans have made a mat on top of the mud.

Went to look at the corn that had water over the ears three times...his term for it "mechanically UNharvestable"

What a moldy, sprouted, immature, rotten, muddy mess, am to get the areas that were not under water and then they will send an adjuster out to watch me destroy the mess.  It is standing good though.

Said they would notify the reinsurance company to prepare for a larger loss than originally budgeted for.

OH JOY .... I did not have a good feeling about this year at planting time...

Re: Whats your cop for next year

Just a question for all the market experts that think you should sell it before it is planted .... how would this have worked out?  Sorry to say this is far from my first heart break here in swampville, Iowa

Bet I can stay in business longer selling it after I grow it than selling it before I plant it.

Hand me another beer and pass the popcorn,  just sitting here in the cheap seats waiting for the crop insurance RA fall price to be set.

Re: Whats your cop for next year

Hobby your last question shows a little of the difference in north and south. I'm setting here with no storage, I am talking to bin builders about putting up my first ones. I have been running the numbers hard about booking enough beans to cover all my expenses next year. This year is shot for me and I don't want to have another one. I need prices locked in, 10 sure looks better than 6,7 or 8.
No way in the world I want to be setting on next years crop waiting for the price to get better.
That's what I like about these internet sites, shows different ways in different areas.

Re: Whats your cop for next year

425, yes ican and do molboard some coc. not always the case, but this year my coc is not up to the rotation corn. plowed, ripped or sstrip till. Strp til is on the one lighter soil farm i have and BIG difference. cos was better. yield map shows a stark contrast.

Re: Whats your cop for next year

Jed that is a great comment.  And your right we are all sitting in a little different boat.  I relate directly with Hobby on some crops and not on others.  Dryland wheat, milo, soybeans on weak water --- I am high risk like hobby and feel the same.

Irrig corn, milo we have more consistancy since drought is our bigger issue.  I tend to price enough early to cover some input costs.  Not a large % but some.   Then we are in a high basis area for feed grains so our storage and delivery ability is a big tool for marketing.

We all sit in a different boat.  The first rule in producer marketing is to know the strengths and weaknesses of that boat.

Marketing "plan" salesmen seldom take that into consideration and loose a lot of customers by not recognizing it.
