Who's getting rain?

Anybody who needs it? Quite a frog-strangler barreled through Des Moines last night. Sounds like we're headed into a cool, damp week. Not great! Anybody reckon you'll be able to get much done in the field this week?

Re: Who's getting rain?

SCMN:  Got .5" yesterday morning and still have some snow banks left along line fences.  Have one pond left that is going down very slowly because frost in the ground is keeping the tile from draining it.  With a high in the mid 30's tomorrow and low to mid 40's the rest of the week the soil just ain't going to warm up very fast.  Still a little early to plant anyway.

Looks like I80 is getting wet from Cheyenne to east of the Quad Cities.  Storm totals of 2" plus in places according to NOAA.

Keep your head down in South Podunk!!

Re: Who's getting rain?

Not a drop, and looks like my location is like the parting of the Red Sea. They claim we've got a decent chance for the next several hours, but I'm not holding my breath. To much of a change to fast to receive anything significant.

80° here in Ohio today. Dusting of snow expected tomorrow night. Hohum, it's just April in Ohio.

Re: Who's getting rain?

Given the metrics of this system, I am unimpressed.  The gulf is wide open, streaming warm moist air into the midwest.  We should already be having a breakout of severe storms from the Gulf to Canada.  This system looks more like a typical winter type storm, than something we should be seeing in April.  With the location of the jet stream to the cold front, and given the nature of the air masses involved, I would expect to see a large amount of severe weather.  Maybe it hasn't played out yet.  But I would be expecting to AR and MO to be getting hit hard with severe weather.  What's surprising to me is that it isn't already in play.

The other thing that I notice is the disorganization in this system.  Once again, some are getting lots, some nothing.  This is the kind of system that should have given a line from Fargo to the panhandles a fair amount of rain.  Rememer what I said several years ago - and it still pertains.  We are in a cycle that we need to get the rain in the spring in the Central US.  KS, NE, MO, IA, S 1/2 of Il really are going to need these spring rains.  When the panhandle regions show that the drought is subsiding, then so should the rest of the Central US.

My biggest concern remains the cold.  It is unrelenting across Canada and the northern tier.  I've talked about this one since Jan I think.  This is going to be the major story of the year in my book.   What Isc76cat said about our are is true.  My water line down by my shed fially thawed out yesterday - it has never frozen up before.  Still a fair amount of snow in shaded ditches and shaded North Slope areas.  I suspect we still have a fair amount of frost in the ground here.  Haven't taken a ground temp yet - no real reason to as I'm sure we're at the most in the low 40's.  And like cat said - a week of crappy weather coming up. Looks like I will be using my Y memebership more this week...

Re: Who's getting rain?

Good soaking rain here [Nort. Cent. Wi.] yesterday [ Apr. 12 ]. Should help get more frost out of roads and reduce snowbanks in sheltered areas. Forecast for next 5 days cool and wet...mid to upper 30ies days...mid to upper 20ies nites. Spring coming very slow!!!

Re: Who's getting rain?

Jenny, I would agree with you on the frost situation here in NC Iowa. Talked to a neighbor yesterday who was out pulling fence posts and some were still froze in. Some field work has started around here. Very little but there are tractors moving. Just started raining here for the first time this morning. Saw some severe storms fire up yesterday afternoon to our east. We are starting our 11th year here in our new home. This is the first spring our sump pump has been dry. Basement has not drawn any water into it yet. We are not too dry yet I think the frost is gone around our house so I'm surprised at not having an active sump. If we can warm up the week after Easter there will be planters going the end of that week. After last years spring I hope we are hoping for rain around Memorial Day weekend. FWIW......MikeM

Re: Who's getting rain?

Central Iowa, .98" from last night and this  morning, still raining  at noon.  Not very "punchy" but glad for every drop.

Re: Who's getting rain?

Only 3 or more inches here.  The frost should be gone.  Maybe, more on the way.
