feedyard talk 6/24. ..........Is this fixable???

OLIGOPOLY’ IN CATTLE MARKETING DEMANDS ACTION, SAY SENATORS

If you didn't read this article ---scan it --- give it some thought

I am not thinking about a media type truth hunt, but there are a lot of "look at me" statements quoted here.

It sounds like there are folks listed that have no idea what is going on, and I found one of the quotes to be very good.

What did you think.....??       KSU should have avoided the question IMO.

Mike thanks for the article on the hail storms........ when you get done with it, Kansas will probably take its weather back.  🙂

Re: feedyard talk 6/24. ..........Is this fixable???

How about this for a idea:  We break up packer owned livestock arrangements and ALL marketing of greater than a couple head of livestock must be done through a open auction forum?   I`m not saying that 5,000hd of hogs out of a tunnel barn would have to physically run over the scale at the small local auction barn, but it could be a public video to openly set the base price and the the "raid & steal" premiums beyond that could also be publicly available.  None of these "producer confidentiality" excuses.

The EWG site tells everyone`s farm subsidies, so why shouldn`t information on each feedlot or hog farm`s price also be openly known?   "producer confidentiality"  is more for the packer`s benefit than anyone else`s.

Re: Funny, how ....

Your problem with the packer monopolies is the politics, there's no political vested interest.

Take, for instance, the republicans' current campaign against Big Tech's control of the internet.  The republicans don't like the way Big Tech can censor the republicans' continuous stream of lies, even the most outrageous ones, so they're hell-bent on squashing Big Tech's power.

While I agree completely with your radical idea of breaking up packer monopolies, I don't see how you can ever get it done as long as the republicans control Midwest politics and the packers own the republican politicians.

Deserves a smile and a wink-=--- and a pinch of salt.

BA I am afraid that regulations on who owns cattle will push the whole issue closer to chicken and hog realities.

Rick you might be "tongue in cheek" but you got a point.  Midwestern conservative politicians just don't know how to optimize their power over the voters.  We've let this crisis go far too long without an election cycle solution.

Re: Funny, how ....

Illinois is owned by Democrats they could care less about anything south of I 80 or west of I 39 they are to busy with saying the right pronouns and blaming whitey for everything they won't do anything unless their pockets get full first like most politicians on both sides.

As far as  big meat packing they will be deemed to big to fail and consolidate into bigger monopolies the only positive is local locker plants in my area are booked through June of 2022 with a big waiting list for any cancelations at least the demand for protein especially local farm raised is off the charts.

Re: feedyard talk 6/24. ..........Is this fixable???

Come on folks------ This dead carcass has lots of meat left on it......... and a pile of nonsense quotes to play with.

1. Where can I go to get the neighbors yearling calf grazing my corn processed and fully contained in my freezer?  Or my heifer that stays with him for that matter?

2.  Does even one of these bills come close to addressing the problem of the title of this article??

3.   Rick is right, it takes a lot of political leg work to address an issue( or create one).  Remember all those, timely, E coli cases against packers?  The campaign of inspections that followed primarily against small public Main Street packers, who are now out of business.  All brought to you by irrational press and politicians paying off the anti(whatever) voices claiming to finance their elections.--------------------- that all certainly is a big part of the problem?

4. Where does Cory Booker get his ox gored, being a vegetarian that vows a heart for animal rights?    He will be one of the first senators to get T-bones smuggled to his address after it is illegal to have a kill floor in the midwest.   Not a dig, it is just the way congressional politics works.

5 KSU voice is off topic....... realizes it and jumps in the Covid-19 fox hole and starts yelling odd statements up into the night air.   Will fed cattle numbers go down? And worse is that a generally accepted escape from the question?  "and some physical processing capacity may be added.”----- is there a plant in his state that is running a third shift???

Rabobank guy has been predicting falling beef demand for a long time.... so his continued wrong perspective helps save KSU from the fox hole.

6. Then comes the ugly payoff......"alternative marketing arrangements".........Is that a kickback to vocal activists to "stay in line"---- a gift to a few to sell Breeding herd replacements and provide quotes on the idea that helps sooooo few........ soooo little.  A better price for your best if you buy into ...............  Is that a packer run scam or can we all be best?

7.   Justin Topper provided the only quote of any accuracy............ “Every time we gain in efficiency, we lose in competition.”   simple as that and congress won't address it.... It might mean rolling back former mistakes in administering regulation and reacting to industry crime on the criminals behalf.  Congress will never admit federal mistakes.

Soooo am I back to the depression days when we butcher in the back yard to avoid the federal created mess that is a "Oligopoly"??????

Will congress ever consider that ........... technology destroys competition....... and therefore competitive economies.

Re: feedyard talk 6/24. ..........Is this fixable???

Some legal observers have surmised that the NCAA decision portends a tougher SCOTUS stance on Anti-Trust in general.

I’m skeptical.

In The Ownership Society, everybody can hate Amazon but nobody wants their Amazon stock to go down. Or heaven forbid, to be held responsible while enemy media carved them up.

Even though, as it is famously observed, the Rockefellers probably got richer with multiple Standards than just one. At least it didn’t hurt them much.
