Re: getting a grain buyer

What part of va? I'm in the northern tip, Winchester area. Va poultry in broadway is currently paying a +40 basis on corn. I sell my beans and wheat through hostetter grain based out of new holland, pa. I then deliver to Baltimore and central PA respectively. Martins grain elevator in Hagerstown, md is another option, but they don't pay as well. I can send you phone numbers if interested. Also a large ship yard in Norfolk if that's closer to your area. 4 hour ride from here...

Re: getting a grain buyer

Just ask what the price is. Then they'll ask you how much you have to sell. You'll be on your way. They'll keep your number if you tell then you're a new producer.

Re: getting a grain buyer

They started a bio-energy plant just a few miles south of Richmond last year. Made tons of contracts with growers for barley. Apparently it was gov't funded because they never opened the front door. Tyson chicken honored the contracts in the end. They buy grain at their Edinburg, Va plant but I do not have the number.

Re: getting a grain buyer

Remember in grain farming if you contract to sell it, but eventually don't grow it, you must buy it elsewhere and deliver. So don't be too anxious to contract until you know you will make a crop. Even without a contract, you can work with a buyer to make sure their is "room at the inn" as a local buyer likes to say.

As a rule getting/finding a grain buyer will be one of the least of your worries.
