Re: insurance corn.......

Here in SESD we were in one of the goldilocks areas up until we received only around an inch of rain in July.    We still have good potential if we could catch some rain, but we are in the time of year when rain is scarce.   The cool temps have given us a reprieve for now, but that means we will really be racing jack frost to the finish line and spotting him a good lead on us at the start of the race.

I am considering buying some out of the money Dec corn call options because I don't think the market is reflecting the realities of this crop and the huge crop losses that can still happen if we don't get rain or the freeze comes before maturity.   The dec. calls would also be a hedge against my crop insurance.   I should probably look at Nov bean calls as well because this crop is behind and dependent on Aug. rains that do not look to be abundant.

Re: insurance corn.......

What do you mean "if" a freeze comes before maturity?      I'm no weatherman, nor do I play one on TV, but this freeze threat is real.

Re: insurance corn.......

Agreed rt,

a mid to late Sep freeze is entirely in the cards for upper midwest and even N half of IA.

12 GDU's for Des Moines today, 7.5 for Minneapolis. -----eeek.

Re: insurance corn.......

Rt aren't you from the buckeye state. If you go to the Farm Science Review, how many times have you had to scrap frost to get there. I live about as far south as you can get in the state and I can remember a few times. BTW FSR is middle of September.
