Re: question on gmo
one unmentioned fact. Mearly by getting involved in the issue, the government has redefined the term GMO, and allowed the folks outside usda and research to determine what is safe food. Now a true usda certified non gmo label is a guarantee that no pesticides were used in the creation of the grains involved. Along with several other "good feeling" issues (like organic fertilizers).
S oooooo now even wheaties can carry the nongmo label for other reasons than genetic modifications. Wouldn't suprise me if we get a label requirement out of usda that says "Caution: we can't guarantee this product has not ben subjected to the criteria banned on the certified non-gmo label!"
We are going to get covered up with this and your grocery shelves are going to get a variety of shades of green labeling, just because the well meaning usda had to get involved in the "definition" business.
The anti GMO crowd is so wrong on this issue and never needed to be right. They just needed the appearance of being right. Thank you usda.

Re: question on gmo
Many of the people working at these checkoff places are the same ones we originally wanted to reach out to.
They are there for the pay check.
On one of my trips a few years ago I had the good fortune to sit next to a person that worked in the Pork checkoff promotion organization coming back from the LA area.
Said was normally in the front of the plane BUT travel funds were cut back. As I used to be in the pork raising business I decided after our visit that improvements were needed.
Kinda like the milk mustache thing and beef checkoff had peta type personallities as spokespeople. Almost like govt ... more self serving than results orientated.

Re: question on gmo
Before the government can get into the "definition" business, they are going to need consulting from Bill Clinton re: what "is" actually is.

Re: question on gmo
I know it's more complicated than this since science has become more sophsticated - sure, certain regulations have to be in place...........but, ridiculous is ridiculous---------are they splitting hairs here, molecules and atoms?......... hold on here...just 1 cotton pickin' minute...every generation of any life form is MODIFIED genetically by natural selection and God.
Also, ever since man learned to grow his food, it's been modified to produce better, more, etc. for 12,000 years now.
I CALL THESE COMPANIES & COUNTRIES "OUT" BULL-SHEEP -----"TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE, THEN."
Someone of infuence on the physical side needs to re-inflate their scrotum on this stuff........

Re: question on gmo
CX You can't fix stupid. These people won't listen to reason.
You can fill them full of info and facts but they won't hear any of it.
They know all and you are just a stupid greedy farmer.
They're on a bandwagon that's going to be hard to get them off of.

Re: question on gmo
Every bit of the corn I raised is gmo, of some type. But, i used to raise non gmo corn and many still do. If the consumer wants non gmo and is willing to pay for it, i guess i can do that. If the cost of gmo is too high or consumer common sense sets in, they will just indifferently choose the product with the best value. If the usda outlawed all types of gmo's tomorrow, i would easily still be farming next year.

Re: question on gmo
yes ida,
And I think the consumer should make the final decisions. I liked it better when the fear shoppers went to the health food store so there was more room in the grocery. Now I here them at the grocery saying their doctor tells them to eat "" and "". But I know what they are calling a doctor and there is not always a PHD to justify the title.
And that leads to the point where I do care. ------- I heard on Bloomfield last evening that consumer confidence in private corporate america is very low. The only group lower is political leadership.
What position is the shopper in when the terms on the label are continually redefined to include whatever the latest theory on "life style" or "public communal" agriculture is. Or when the ability to fool our tastebuds into thinking sour is sweet by an "politically acceptable" additive makes cellery taste like a cinnamon roll, will it be a cinnamon roll because it is good for us.--- (thoughts taken from the bloomberg tv series titled "Brink") If the new "cinnamon roll" reduces obesity will the name change be justified.
When the meaning of words change bureaucraticly what does the shopper rely on.
What does the consumer find confidence in. Don't we have a responsibility to enhance that, not destroy it.
If we are a little too excited about creating demons and condemn irresponsibly who pays the price?
