Buds galore

Arriving at Jenna's house about five, I m finally seeing flower buds on the fall things...mums, some daisy-like perennials I stuck in the back beds last fall, and the hardy hibiscus are starting to strut their stuff. The knockout roses are blooming up a storm, and even the clematis are giving us a bloom or two, well after their best season.

It has been such a wet year, the sizes of some of these flowers is astounding. Some of the one-quart mums I planted last fall are so big, the biggest wheelbarrow we own wouldn't hold their foliage. I have never seen such huge plants. Funny, since I didn't really feed anything but the roses, and only did that a month or so ago.

Not every plant survived, but the ones that did are thriving. Crape myrtles are finishng their season, in shades of purple and lavendar. The blackberry vines and Concord grapes are bearing up a storm, for new plants.

I have been watching for fall planting bulb specials. Won't sock them into thevground until late October/ early November. Last winter was mild enough to plabpntbup until Christmas, but we don't get that lucky every year. I want to add more daffodils and Jenna's favorite purple tulips, and also some hyacinths and crocus.

We do need to resituate a couple of dwarf pears and a fig, because thy aren't thriving where we set them this past year. They are hanging on, but not happy. Mike says he will help me move and mulch them soon.

We still have the firepit to finish. After that, this yard will be pretty much where we want it to be. We walked into a cool space at long last today, after fighting this AC system in his rare spare time since late June.

He and the helper found one more slow leak last week, so hopefully all the holes are stopped up at last. That's what I get for trying to do this ourselves...I have to say the $4000 or so less for going this route made that an attractive decision. Time will tell ifmit was a wise choice or a monumentally dumb one.

We are sitting and plotting a few fall road trips. Most of the places we want to see are within about 150 miles of this place, so nothing radical. Most of what I want to do is take time to smell the flowers. Lots of those to enjoy here!

What are your fall fun plans? I know, harvest looms...but it doesn't last forever! We are down to 17 acres of last cutting hay, as of today.

Re: Buds galore

Ainsley's Birthday,  Son's Birthday,  Husband's Birthday  and Mom's Birthday.   15, 21, 28, & 30th.  So at least one more trip to Rockford.   I'm leaving tomorrow for Ainsley fix and to help clean house.

Friday night HS football games,    Might try to fit in a couple of  small College FB games too if harvest and weather cooperates.    Need to get house next door ready for Family Thanksgiving.  Need to come to some conclusions as to what we will do and try to plan the kitchen out.

Harvest, harvest, harvest,  apply fertilizer,  get the pits pumped,   need to meet with accountant...tax planning.   After harvest hope to get more estate stuff done.   Right now the lawyer says it will be the first of the year.   Meanwhile.... lots of money just sits in a checking account  WAITING!

Re: Buds galore

Working on trying to get my back & knee so I can make the trip to World Dairy Expo. I had said I wasn't crazy about going but sure didn't need this to decide plans. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR! Other than that not sure of plans. Our other trip depends on animal health & mine. And mom. Hope to get to U of I to see grandson play hockey. Mums are looking good here too. Mine are huge & loaded with buds. Just starting to pop. My butterfly Bush is also loaded. Most of my other perennials are struggling due to our drought-try to water but not too successfully.

Re: Buds galore

Sounds like a fun, but busy, fall! Enjoy that first birthday...Ainsley is adorable.

If you can get the Family Thanksgiving done without much change next door, you may find contractors would be happy to have work between then and Christmas...most people don't want to tear up a house during the holidays. Might not bother you, since it's a second house.

Re: Buds galore

So nice to hear that the yard is in full bloom.  We are just struggling to keep things alive.  Finally supposed to get some rain this weekend.  Has cooled off quite abit.  was out last night cutting off lilies, mulberry trees growing up in my pine trees.  DH and I actually took a walk around the yard last night and pointed out some things that needed done.  So when he was busy loading corn, I got out my trimmers and did what I could.  I know that in a few weeks I will be down for several months and won't be able to do much, so I better take the time now when I can.  need to get to my mom's too.  This fall we have cattle to haul to market...last Sunday's load averaged 1430!  whoa...time to get rid of them!  Porch to be redone...funny, last year when I had shoulder surgery it was my bathroom, this year will be my porch. Hope to get some time to go look at fall foliage.  I know my DH wants to get away at least for a night...

Re: Buds galore

Asked Mike over breakfast if the time we have today here at Jenna's could be spent policing weeds and deadheading the spent blooms. Shouldn't take more than an hour, if hebhelps even less.

Right now, we are dealing with the abandoned rental house,I am on the phone with the electric company, getting power started back to it, so the minor amount of housekeeping can be accomplished. Then it will be contacting the realtor, to schedule her housekeeper, so the house can be shown.

I am done cleaning up behind tenants for now...it will come out of their deposit, and become part of the judgment against them eventually. We live and learn.

Hope you get to enjoy some free time before you do that shoulder over. Be glad you ony have two ofbthem , I guess!
