Could KISS this computer!!!!!

Just moseyed over to my Quickbooks accounts for the two farm entities here in NC.  Still have the few handwritten checks for Mike's and my homeplaces and the rental houses back in VA; but, I put both of these much-busier accounts into the computer back in January of 2010.

It usually takes me a good two days to break out and add up totals by category for taxes.  This is the part I procrastinate on, until I just force myself to do the job.  Not this year.

I will have to put a few numbers together, and break out the payments to the credit card, and the cardholder has a function on its website for that.  Will go there and print them in a few days.  Essentially, I just did the equivalent of two days' work in less than two minutes.

So, I could kiss the computer for making my life this much easier.  The flipside is that I could KICK myself for not doing this simple thing many years ago!

We live and learn, I guess...anyone else still hanging onto solely handwritten records?  I am an electronic convert now!

Re: Could KISS this computer!!!!!

I use Quickbooks edition 2003 !! I was just wondering how much longer I can add to it. Do you use the one they have offered on the internet, or just do you have your computer version? I really need to break down and buy a newer version, but mine is still working great for me.

Re: Could KISS this computer!!!!!

I bought it the first time back about then, but had no clue what to do with it then.  I think they no longer support that version, but do not take my word for it.

This time, I went for the Quick Start version, I think it's called.  I found it to be extremely user-friendly.  I am sure I bought the software in a package at an Office Depot for about a hundred bucks.

Best moneyh I've spent in eons, in terms of productivity improvement.  To be able to pull out the many different reports, customize them for any given time period, and hit "print" is a thrill for me.

I know...doesn't take much for this country girl!

Re: Could KISS this computer!!!!!

Kay,   I just don't understand how a modern woman like you could have still had her records being done with a pencil and calculator.   I switched over 15 years ago.  In fact I think I'm on my 3rd computer and 3rd software purchase.  About 2 years ago I switched to printing checks with the computer.  When the statements show up all I have to do I add the checks that were handwritten.   I can reconcile an account in about 15 minutes.

Since you do payroll do you have it so the SS withholding is right?    I had to order the newest version of PC MARS ($100,  Thank you congress)  so I can get the SS withholding correct.   I could manually get the change in Illinois Income tax.   But,  to withhold 2% less SS was not possible.    I rely on my computer completely for writing payroll checks.   If the computer is down,   I tell them I'll do my best to write a check that is close and will fix it when the computer is back.

My appointment is tomorrow afternoon.  Will do more checking tomorrow AM.

Re: Could KISS this computer!!!!!

I know, isn't that the neatest thing! I started with the older version and when my computer was replaced I had a computer geek transfer everything to the new program. I use Quicken basically as a checkbook and keep a running tally. I never went in to detail and learned how to reconcile with the bank and the more detailed records. Maybe this year....

Re: Could KISS this computer!!!!!

Probably two reasons...my father kept  the while she-bang in his head.   They even used counter checks for ages.  Remember those?

I had used One Write checks for years, and it was, pure and simple, a control thing. Whenever I refuse to adopt a new thing,it is a control issue.  Only started online banking a couple of year s ago, too.  Some accounts I will still nto put online...seeing apaper statement once a month is enough for savings and such.

I did not trust myself to be able to get it right. I was fearful of crashes and lost data.  Now, I just backup to a thumb drive routinely, and hope for the best.

My computer course last year came in really handy, too.  My last one was in 1985, on TI-99s, with 64 K of RAM.  So, needed some confidence boosting there!

This is a lot of my decision to go to school again, too...to push me outside of my cocoon!

Re: Could KISS this computer!!!!!

I have used Quicken for many years and could not do without it. But maybe it is time to use it to print checks. I have forgotten how to get the checks for the printer?

Re: Could KISS this computer!!!!!

You are a women of all trades.  You have so much on your plate. I don't know how you do it!  I guess staying active must help you!  I went to bring up my Microsoft money /Money Plus program last night and couldn't find it!  I have too many backups of back ups I think!  Everything went backwards when my computer crashed this summer.  I did finally find it.  I do need to just spend the money and get a new updated program.  Since MM isn't made anymore I need to do Quicken or Quickbooks.  i am so spoiled by the reports I get that are easy for taxes.  I really need to go more indepth for the farm though.  You amaze me!

Re: Could KISS this computer!!!!!

I order my checks through my bank, which is probably not the cheapest way, but I am happy with the service.  I get the flat sheets of three ledger-sized checks without stubs.  Your bank customer service rep can help you choose the type that is best for you.

You can also order from companies like McBee, Harland, etc.  I think some of the software programs have atuto-order points in the numbering.  If they are linked to your bank, may order directly for you.  I haven't gotten that far yet.

I do enjoy the printer writing checks for me, but it can be an aggravation if the printer decides to act up.  So far, I've managed to make it through a year of it and paid everyone on time...but I have fussed at it once or twice!Smiley Happy

Re: Could KISS this computer!!!!!

Thank you, but honestly, I could not go to school and keep up here without such a supportive husband.

Mike is not as busy with the farm 's production most of the time now, since our daughter took over weekday manager's duties.  Our other employee washes the buildings and does all the vaccinating, and assists with pig loadins and loadouts.

Mike does all our repairs (a lot on a dozen buildings) and waste management, and covers when our daughter is off, mostly weekends and her vacations.  He keeps the production records....and I take the financials as my responsibility.  We share waste management recordkeeping duties. He does the lion's share of the hay cutting and baling the big rounds, she does small squares.  They and the hired man do sheep care.  We used to do all of this ourselves.  .

If someone has to do a property tax appeal, that is my job.  If someone has to decide on a repair for a rental house, that is me.  If there is an attorney, accountant, or insurance agent in the room, I have to be there. When the mining operation my father initiated on my homeplace went awry, that got dumped on me....four out of the past eight years eaten away with that aggravation.

We are at a point where all the property tax pictures are between general revaluations for 2-3 more years.  The mining issues are virtually settled now, with a few years left on our research lease.  My little farm next to my homeplace is in five-year programs for wildlife habitat with three years left on them   I saw this as a good chance to get away for the farm for a coupoel of years and get some skill adn knowledge I wanted to develop.

The rentals are full for now, and our son takes more and more responsibility for them as time goes on.    Our hog business is in a mature business mode, with not as many management decisions to make...or at least plenty of time to work on them if we do.

I have two little commercial buildings to make some decions about as we remodel them this coming year, but that is on a two-year plan right now.  One rental house will need some work, and there is a small barn roof I need to draft, to get the boys to figure materials for, but I can do that pretty quickly.

Two of the three kids have gotten their businesses off to a good start.  The third one is moving in that direction, which we are working towards now...in the planning stages.

Nursing school is filling in a lot of time gaps that I'd gotten used to in the last few years.  Mike was kind enough  to hire our employee's wife to clean the house and office every week, so I can relax and enjoy the process there...as much as anyone can enjoy that much pressure!  He took over mowing the yard from me a few years ago, when we got the hired man here, which drastically lightened his workload.

I cooked for the first 20 years of our marriage, and  he's cooking for the second 20, then we will figure out who does what from there on.  I have slightly less than three years left off kitchen duty.  He is totally laundry-challenged, so I do that chore.

I can finally enjoy some of my hobbies, helping our adult children with their lives when they ask me to, and doing a few things Mike and I always wanted to do when we were working every day with no breaks.  It's a good life...still hectic at times, but not in the same way it used to be crazy-busy.

The only thing that is amazing to me is that I've lived long enough to get this far.  I was in such bad shape five years ago, that was not at all a sure bet.  Severakl of my cousins checked out at age fifty or so, and I expected to be in their boat.  TKD got me onto a different path.  I like this one much better....
