Favorite old TV shows

Consider this a spinoff, of the 'sheltered lives' thread.

What are your favorite 'old' TV shows, and why?

I like Gunsmoke, Bonanza, if nothing else, because of their good characters, and strong story lines.

For just vegging out, I like something like The Andy Griffith Show, or Wild Wild West, one because it is funny, the other for action, and I like both, because if you miss 10 minutes putting a kid to bed, you can still figure out whats going on.

For the kids, I like to watch Leave it to Beaver, Happy Days, or The Brady Bunch with them.   They seem to entertain all of us OK.

It sounds like I watch a lot of TV, but most of it is on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, or when my wife is out working.   We'll chill on the sofa & watch TV until we fall asleep (when its too cold to take the kids out).

In another 3 weeks or so, it will be take the kids out, to look for baby calves.  That's always fun for them.

Re: Favorite old TV shows

One thing about living in conservative North Carolina is that anytime a TV show comes on that is too racy for its own good, they drop in Andy Griffith reruns.  No matter how many times you think you've seen every single one a dozen times, they drop in a show or to you don't remember.

I have to say, there are a lot of people very much like the characters still living in this state.  I can't explain why, but they are just different from Virginians.  I sometimes think I have been dropped into a quirky episode...it is surreal.

Other old shows we like:  Star Trek, Mike loves any old Western, and we can tolerate just about any show from our childhoods.  All in the Family is one that changed a lot of minds when we were teens/young adults.  Edith is my alltime favorite character, I think.

Golden Girls, Mary Tyler Moore...Winn's too young to have any real favorites yet, but we nod off to Super Why (not old, but excellent) and catch bits of Elmo on Sesame Street once in a while.  I wish Captain Kangaroo was still around.  He was wonderful.

I wish I could find Phil Donahue's show somewhere...he really opened my eyes to the world, back when I was at home with three tiny kids.  In some ways, he tore down the shelter we grew up under.  I would like to revisit the show from my present perspective.

My kids and I used to watch M*A*S*H reruns every evening when they were in gradeschool.  They were pretty snarky children, and maybe that show is part of why...you just had to be cynical after seeing that the system was so screwy.

I watched Airwolf.  1. on Netflix and 2. It was on the the rerun  MYTV channel about a year and a half ago.   Too bad Jan Micheal Vincent was such a druggie.    I loved the theme song.

Re: Favorite old TV shows

I always liked the westerns from way back in the days of Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger, and Rin Tin Tin on up to the later ones like Alias Smith and Jones and Dr. Quinn.   We liked the detectives like McCloud and Rockford, too.   I caught an episode of Route 66 on youtube the other day...that was one of my favorites.   I miss good comedy shows.  But, what I miss most is the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.            ,

Re: Favorite old TV shows

I can remember, back in grade school, on Friday nights, if I had my schoolwork all done, and there wasn't anything we had to get up early for, on Saturday morning, my Dad would let me stay up late, and watch part of "Johnny" with him.   I remember always wishing that they had an appearance of 'The Mighty Carson Art Players'.

Oh, and how did I forget the Rifleman?

That was one of those shows, where I have yet to see a 'bad' episode.

Johnny Carson as an absolute comic genius, without the option of being vulgar. Standards relaxed a lot - too much, really - and now, what passes for comedy is often just people laughing because they are embarrassed.

Some of the world's funniest people got their first national exposure doing standup routines on the Carson show. I ilked those skit pieces you enjoyed, too; but he made me laugh so hard I cried when he had on the exotic snimals.
