Finally fifties!
After the coldest December and most of January that I can ever remember, we have finally gotten up to our seasonal "normals" in the fifties the past couple of days. It was raw and rainy right before this break - bundle up and tie your hood days - so it feels especially nice now that the highs we had a week ago are our lows right now. Even the dogs are acting like they feel better.
I know that the calendar says that winter is only 1/3 gone, but in this part of NC, the "meteorological" winter is considered to be December, January and February. That means we are almost 2/3 of the way through the worst one we've had since 1989...and, that year, it was just December that was abnormally cold.
Somehow, another thiry days of it just seems way more doable than waiting for "first day of spring" on the third week of March. Unless they froze this winter, I expect we will be seeing crocus and daffodil bulbs shooting in a couple of weeks, of things stay at all like this last two days. I would adore to have one of our February warm snaps - sometimes hops nearly to eighty for a while. Tee shirt weather seems like a distant dream right about now!
The maples in the woods by the house are good indicators, too, When you can see the reddish cast of their buds, you know the woods are waking up from their long winter's nap. I will be watching that groundhog next week pretty closely, won't you?
What is the first sign of spring you will be looking for in the next few weeks? When do you realistically expect to see it?

Re: Finally fifties!
We have had snowstorms the first week of May, but they melt away quickly. Never ready to put away the snow shovel until then. Last year has been the worst that I remember. Record amount of snow (snow drifts over 20 feet high and almost tunnels for roads) and cold temperatures (below 0 for highs most of Jan) makes us thankful for the normal ones we have this year. Usually the ground isn't workable until the first of May either, given the water holding capacity of the soil. I guess that is when we consider spring has sprung here.
ps. The crocuses may bloom here in March and April, but they are usually under the snow.

Re: Finally fifties!
Well, Finally, Thirties! And today we are seeing THE UFO in the sky known as the SUN. Yesterday and today we are trying to get the hog lots cleaned of ice and slush. Hope that the driveways are no longer sheets of ice. We used 50# of salt on driveways yesterday trying to help the situation. Suppose to get real cold next week again.
First sign of spring... the spring thaw, twp. roads are posted with 6-8 ton weight limits. MUD everywhere. Used to include the little calves running around the pasture but, no cow herd anymore. Real signs.. the first tractor hits the fields for field work and the smell of tilled soil.

I always look for the Robin. I know it is a old saying but usually it is close to being correct. We are under another snow warning for the week. My DH went to the field Saturday and it is not near spring here. I just hope everyone is being safe in this winter weather, soon it will be hot.

Was near sixty Saturday, almost seventy Sunday, then not out of the thirties today. No wonder I've gotten a respiratoy inflammation ...old folks call this pneumonia weather.
