Hafta say this...

...to people who think, pig manure stinks...you need to sniff your own!

We are having biosolids applied on my farm and Mike's place, starting June 22, again today, and hopefully finishing up within another thirty days on both places.

Holy Moly! You need to smell this stuff! I am just hoping the house tenants who aren't already planning to move decide to stay...it is totally disgusting!

Give me pig poo any day...Winn says, " Smells like money, MaMa!" , when livehaul rolls by his playyard. This has $$$$ attached, too, but thank Heaven it is only every three years here!

Re: Hafta say this...

Oh my Kay!  You make me really glad we don't have that coming in around here.   My parents had a neighbor that hauled in chicken litter a few years ago.   That was putrid.

Re: Hafta say this...

Mike and I had the "what stinks worst" discussion yesterday.  Lots of chicken house around us, lots of dry litter spread...It is disgusting, even compared to this "humanure".

We have heard that turkey is the worst litter smell.  I am sure poultry of any kind is worse for ammonia, given that they don't urinate exactly.

It wasn't as bad this morning, but the spreader is heading up the farm to the end where we live later today.  He should finish that quarter of the place, to make 3/4, then they will have to come back after at least thirty days.

When the cows can start grazing those paddocks again, we will call them to apply on the back portion.  Funny, the neighbors didn't want us to have hogs up there in a sufficient number to meet our needs, but nothing anyone can do at all about the biosolids.

Almost makes smelling it worth it for a few days every three years....

Re: Hafta say this...

We've had discussions about the smell factors of different waste materials too..      I think possibly the worst smell is when you step in Cat Poop - and thankfully that is in small quantities.. not truck loads of it!       I've never experienced large quantities of turkey manure.. dont' think I'd want to either.

I would rank sheep as smellier than pig..      Cattle isn't too bad unless they are stressed.. then its nasty

Re: Hafta say this...

Growing up on a hog farm I always thought cattle or dairy smelled worse then pig and man does turkey litter reek!!!  I will agree with SLC though...cat poop and pee is the worst I think.  To me it makes no difference because to the producer it's all the smell of $$$  anyways.  😄

Re: Hafta say this...

Winn and I have an inside joke, we say whenever a pig truck rolls past.

He says, " It stinks, MaMa."

I say, "It smells like money to me!"

He turns and waves at the trailer, " Bye-bye, piggies...send MaMa money!"

I really hope the smell dissipates quickly on Mike's place...our tenants that moved in three summers ago just missed the last application. I hope it isn't too long an inconvenience.

Sorry we have to put off the last quarter for a month later, but that is right by our house, not as near to theirs. The first plan was to do the whole place, but that meant hsying the herd for a month, leading right up to calving.

That sounded like an unnecssary expense to me. I was sort of fearful of a jailbreak, too! Nitrates can be high in the thirty days after applying.

Agree about male cat pee. Skunk isn't much worse than that!
